sci fi Poll 5

Today's Poll we have a battle of wills and social warnings with two great films.

Nem and Tool got me thinking about remakes, and while these never had remakes, they did in fact have TV shows that branched off from the movies.

wow, now this is a tough decision! Both are really strong "science fiction" scfi films, maybe not up to the standards of 2001 or Contact, but explorations of a scifi idea, and totally immersed in the time period in which they were made. "Logan's Run" comes from better stock (from an original novel) but "Robocop" is a pretty direct descendant of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein monster. While I never knew there was a Robocop series (hello, NetFlix) but the TV series of Logan's Run thrilled me when I was 14; I wonder how it holds up?

I actually have to think about this one before voting.

Tough call, Robocop has some huge pluses in its favor though.  ED 209 is almost iconic, a gas station blows up, and there's a scene where a wouldbe rapist gets shot in the balls.

TAnimaL , if nothing else check out the made for TV movies on Robocop. The TV series kinda went all cliche, but the "Prime Directive" mini series/movie is pretty darn good.

Prime Directives... 

Ten years after the first film's events, RoboCop has become outdated, tired, and quasi-suicidal. Delta City (formerly Detroit) is now considered the safest place on Earth, and he is no longer viewed as particularly necessary.

The first half of the series focuses on Alex Murphy's former partner, John T. Cable, who is slain by an OCP executive (his own ex-wife, Sara Cable) and resurrected as a cyborg in most aspects identical to RoboCop model, save for color and the addition of a second sidearm. "RoboCable" is sent to destroy RoboCop, but after several battles, Cable is convinced to join Murphy.

Meanwhile, OCP (on the verge of bankruptcy) is taken over by a scheming executive, Damian Lowe, who manages to murder the entire board of directors. To bring OCP back, he plans to use an artificial intelligence called SAINT to automate the entire city.

The second half of the series introduces Dr. David Kaydick, who plans to introduce a “bio-tech” virus (Legion) to wipe out not only Delta City but all life on the planet, infecting computers and people alike. He takes control of RoboCable by planting a chip in him that causes him pain or death, at Kaydick's discretion. RoboCop receives aid from a group of tech thieves led by Ann R. Key (Leslie Hope), who are determined to stop Kaydick, and RoboCop's own son, James(Anthony Lemke) - now fully grown and aware of his father's fate.

RoboCop and his rag-tag band race to stop Kaydick from infiltrating OCP tower and activating SAINT, which would presumably kill almost all humans. During the confrontation, RoboCop and James reconcile with each other, and manage to rekindle RoboCable's previous personality. Ann. R. Key and Kaydick both die during a confrontation with each other. Utilizing James's EMP device, and having shut down RoboCop, RoboCable and LEGION are terminated. RoboCop gets rebooted without his previous OCP restriction programming (as well as restoring his identity as "Alex Murphy" as opposed to an OCP product number) or his prime directives. After viewing a goodbye message left by Cable, Murphy returns to active duty to stop the resultant crime in Delta City due to the EMP pulse blacking out the city.

I know that Netflix did have it a year or so ago, not sure if it's up on the streaming though.

I'm shocked this is as close as it is. RoboCop to me is hands down a superior movie (the sequels and TV show are not even remotely in the same category).

I think 762, you will find a large number of people who have differing tastes, while they love all SciFi, Logan's run fits more with the classic SciFi, where as Robocop is still modern, even though only a few years passed between them.

I had to take a look myself at the results, as I normally don't vote myself until I'm ready to put the next one up, But 5 to 5 is something.

heh, as a side note, if Robocop was made in the 70's , it prob. would have had the original "X" rating, as of the time, "X" wasn't always porn, but extreme violence, etc.

They would be lucky today, to get an "R" ad not a NC-17 rating, in which the latter kills profit even for good movies.

Wow, ShadowDriver.  I just don't know about a remake man. I tend to strongly dislike them all, a classic case was the Remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still.

RoboCop had an X rating. Verhoeven resubmitted it to MPAA twelve times to get it down to R.
