Poll: checking direction of forum interest for models.
« on: April 24, 2011, 08:56:28 pm »
Thought that I'd throw this out there, just checking on a theory of mine.  :)

Poll runs 25 days, and results show up when it's complete.  I think that we should take the pulse every once in a while personally.  And we might all be surprised by the results, I suspect I'll see a surprise or two here..

Thanks Big M.. ;)  I don't know about the rest of you, but I tend to operate under certain assumptions as to everyone is interested in seeing.  But I was thinking the other day that I might be operating under assumptions that are wildly out of date with what people actually want to see, so I thought that maybe a poll here would help illustrate peoples current interests.   :)

I actually work on many Star Trek and "non-star trek" models equally.  Homeworld, Star Wars and certain Space Empires ship designs have always interested me as an artist.  Some people have tried to post non-trek ship models in this forum, but the trend never seems to last long.  Not sure why.

Matter of percetion I guess.. I certainly feel, my perception again, that the Trek stuff gets more responses.

Again though, I'm operating from inside my own head, and My Mileage May Vary right?  That's a reason for the poll.  Are people interested in Trek stuff?  Non-Trek stuff?  Both?  Neither?  Better to put in a general poll that noone can see the results of until the poll elapses.  That way, should be accurate as to what people here want to see, for those that are regularly here to see and respond to the poll.

I hope that everyone takes it, lurker on not.  As long as people post what they personally want to see, I think we'll just get a better idea as to where we all are as a forum as to the interest of the forum.  :)

All sci fi is interesting to me.. and I find ways to integrate it into my game, particularly with speculative, non-canon things like fighters.

for years my Klink fighters have been re-textured Colonial Vipers, for instance.  Also, I would guess that most of my freighter and aux carrier lineup is from other science fiction.

great idea...

I voted.

I would also like to see a poll about textures and skins....

I have gotten a few negative responses like (i'm into the game not the eye candy!) and (planets and backgrounds take away from the point of killing your enemy)...

hummm... I could find this very disturbing because I've always thought this makes the game a better experience as a whole. just look at all the graphics going into all the xbox / ps3 games, just to name a few....

Does anyone else feel that SFC should be flown in the blackness of space without any distractions...or better yet, why even have ships? just take a blank white cube / orb with no textures at all and fly them...take all the color from all the weapons / shields /explosions too, heck don't even have them at all..I mean... if you know you pressed the R key, why have a colored ring to distract you..  :hoppin:

I voted, and will even tell you what I voted as it has always been the same:
I download what i like and don't download anything I don't like

I have a huge non trek model collection

ShadowDiver, do what you want and like to do, others will have some influence on you like if it is advice the rest ignore. You should be modifing making changes to support your own interest and enjoyment, if you want to do a mod for yourself that is the best reason, share it if you like people like me will try it just because it is different and might be fun.

Not everyone agrees with everything I have done either, but it has influenced others, but either way it goes i did it for my own enjoyment.

Just want to add something to what GAFY said..

Everyone here may not always agree, and people have their own opinions about what they like and don't.. but I've never ever been part of anything that has lasted as long as this community.  And long after Taldren and Interplay both went under.. here we are still modding the game.  Doing new stuff, redoing old stuff, constantly improving.

Trying not to get too specific in this thread because I don't want to try and influence any votes on it, but I think between everyone here over the years, I've gotten a lot of stuff and worked on a lot of stuff.  For me, it's just always nice to see it out there and getting played and used.  :)

Was thinking of all the support communities that this game had at one point there was 20+ communities out there at one point just for this game.
but since you mentioned 2 major players gone now is this the third and final large one for it?

I love how this community has matured. After the game lost main stream attention, it weeded out the glory-seekers who got bent out of shape over critiques and personal preferences. Now, it seems that most people model what they are interested in and then graciously share it with everyone else with a take-it-or-leave it attitude. It has been fun to watch everyone grow as an artist. This feels like a safer, pond version of Scifi-Meshes.com. That is the fun for me; I rarely actually play the game any more.

I am always here.

No seriously - just been busy trying to not go bankrupt in RL - so I'm on a semi-hiatus. People come and go - but I think there are always a few people who always come back.

I also voted for "both Trek and non-Trek related models." I love seeing other sci-fi ships show up (Eagles vs Constitution-class, Klingons chasing the Millenium Falcon) but it's on a case-by-case basis for me, whatever tickles my fancy.

For me, much of the "original" ships ARE non-Trek - there were no Lyrans or ISC in TOS (or in TNG, DS9, etc), and I've not cared much for the Taldren, 3rd-Generation Romulans. For awhile I replaced those with the "SFB" versions that are out there but when it came down to it, they looked like lumps of lead to me. ;) So now they're BSG-R ships, both "canon" and "fan."

It's just so wonderful to be able to have choices, and based on the hard work of a community that cars about the game. Thanks, model makers everywhere.

Ya'know I've just got to add to that.....got to.....

I have always love the Macross saga, and before that it was starblazers...I remember Space 1999 but the way I remember it might not be how it really was :)

SirGod has this poll going about best Sci-Fi ever and I'm starting to get melancholy over older sci-fi..
Yes I would love to see more starblazer ships, war of the worlds, flash gordon and thunderbirds..  all had really cool ships

so yes I would love to see new stuff.

...I remember Space 1999 but the way I remember it might not be how it really was :)

yeah, I know that's true of alot :)  I loved 1999, when I was young and now, but it is dated and flawed. 1st season was trying to be 2001: A Space Odyssey, 2nd season was trying to Trek-TOS... One fanboy out there has done an admirable job of re-editing the show into "Space:2099," taking out the bad science, adding FX, making the scripts flow better. You might be better off just watching some of his and saying "Oh, yes, I remember it this way" ;)

Never got into Macross, but Starblazers was cool. I used to have a ship in OP that used the Yamato model, with 5 or 6 PPDs for the wave gun, kablam!

I grew up watching  every sci-fi  show I could ,each one represented a new world, a new Idea ,a new way of looking at things. And I liked them all, even the one's who's ships looked a lot like 1950's hub caps. The work you all do here I can not do, I feel very lucky to have found a group of very talented people who work very hard on making all this great ships and then SHARE!

Well, there's a term for people sitting in a dark room not sharing and just doing things for themselves.. and I'm sure that it's responsible for failing eyesight.  >=)

I honestly can't see much point in doing things up and not having them out there.. that line of thought has stuff sit on a hard drive until data rot sets in and you lose the drive.  Way better to share.  :D
