12 bit colour and lossy compression? Visible posterisation and ringing? Sorry, that does not qualify as "high-definition" in my books.

An analog signal with 1080 lines of resolution would be incredibly superior. No comparison. Again we're burned by bandwidth.  >:(

OK, I guess it is not much of a rant, but there it is.

On the other hand, if you don't have cable, digital provides a drastic improvement in clarity compared to analog.

I don't know about that. I seem to recall some excellent quality images using a rooftop antenna - completely free of any compression artifacts.

What really gets me is how they overcompress the standard resolution channels in an effort to make the "hd" channels look better.  ::)

Regardless, I have found a solution that makes them all look the same: take my glasses off!  ;D  (seriously, it looks much better without my correction for mild short-sightedness)

I think the idea is that a digital image will be clear at a signal strength where the analog would be fuzzy but it then fails completely at a level where the analog would be bad but perhaps usable for some purposes (news for example).

Note:  I don't have digital myself yet.

I have Digital myself, however, it looks like crap on older analog TV's.

(We have the last two 36" Sony TV's that are n existence I believe. Three, if I ever replace the tube in it.) That being said, I also have my main PC monitor, a small 22" 1080P that it looks amazing on. (using the HDMI cable, or networking to the box itself.)

True but only if the picture isn't blocking out. I have to constantly fiddle with the antenna to get a watchable picture. With the old analog signal once I got my antenna set I rarely had to mess with it other than when it got knocked out of whack. I am so close to the antennas that a powered antenna is probably a waste of money.
