Fun Idea. Best sci fi movie ever.
« on: March 06, 2011, 01:30:34 pm »
Ok, here is the plan. We all make a master list in this thread, of sci fi movies we all rank up  as must see.

Then , when we have a list, I'll take it, and we will do a poll once a week, pitting two films against each other.

every week, We will record the winner, and then move on to the next two.

Eventually, we will wind it down, and have the final two, and thereby give us our communities best sci fi movie.

So Suggestions are now open friends.

Unless otherwise stated, movies in this list that I have provided are intended to reflect the original, not remade or remastered or re-anything version of a film. Also, unless stated otherwise, this list is intended to reflect a specific movie if in a series, not the entire seires as a whole (i.e. Star Wars would be for Star Wars episode IV: A New Hope, and not a reference to The Trilogy). I would anticipate that eventually someone would name a sequal or remake, I'm just not going to be that someone today.

The Last Starfighter

Planet of the Apes

The Blob

War of the Worlds

Forbidden Planet

The Time Machine

Independance Day

The Terminator

That should get y'all started. Cheers!

Edit: How could I forget:

Unbreakable would be fine.

I'm pretty loose with the Criteria, and everyone here knows sci fi when they see it.

Keep em coming guys.

Boy o'boy we got some old ones there don't we....

OK, my two cents, but I can't believe my first one never made anyone list...

1. Aliens (1986)......that's number 2 for those that never saw it.. also the uncut version, with the extra footage about Ripley's daughtert.

2. Enemy Mine (1985)...Dennis Quad & Louis Gossett Jr

3. StarGate (1994)...Kurt Russell

4. The Thing (1982)...Kurt Russell

5. Red Planet (2000)...Val Kilmer

6. Star Trek (2009)...Chris Pine

7. Tron (1982)...Jeff Bridges, the orignal.

8. The Matrix (1999)...Keanu Reeves

9. Armageddon (1998)...Bruce Willis

10. Blade Runner (1982)...Harrison Ford

11. The Fifth Element (1997)...Bruce Willis

12. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)...Keir Dullea

13. Sunshine (2007)...Cillian Murphy

14. Gattaca (1997)...Ethan Hawke

15. Predator (1987)...Arnold Schwarzenegger

16. Dark City (1998)...Rufus Sewell

17. Deja Vu (2006)...Denzel Washington

18. K-PAX (2001)...Kevin Spacey

19. Dune (1984)...Kyle MacLachlan

20. Pitch Black (2000)...Vin Diesel

That's my top 20, not necessarily in that order...if you need more I've got more

also I need a specification.....Sci-fi....or Sci-Fi comedy like Mars attacks, Galaxy Quest and Small Soldiers?

Sci-fi comedy is good, as there is not a person here, who doesn't love Galaxy Quest, or say Spaceballs.

Only a mention in passing, but no one stated...

Star Wars
Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi
Attack of the Clones
Revenge of the Sith

Then there's

Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country
Star Trek First Contact
Star Trek Wrath of Khan & Search for Spock (simply put, though wrath is better, spock really is needed for the rest of the story if you ever see any of the later ST movies...otherwise you'll be going WTF).

Tron: Legacy

Someone already mentioned Blade Runner

Avatar (in 3d).

Chronicles of Riddick (I thought it better then Pitch Black, and more deep Sci Fi as well)

Great suggestions guys. I'll keep taking them until Frey does his renovations, and then we can start voting on the titles then.

It will allow for us to also get a larger group to choose from.

I'd like to add,

Dune
THX1138
Silent Running
Logan's Run

Not sure if I repeated anyone, and if so, my apologies.

Chronicles of Riddick (I thought it better then Pitch Black, and more deep Sci Fi as well)

I tend to agree, I hated Pitch Black, but I liked the Chronicles.  I think its because I don't particularly like Riddick as a character, but the richly painted world featured in Chronicles really appealed to me.

Other movies that I liked
Highlander Endgame: Did a great job of transitioning the TV series chronology to the big screen, too bad they had to %^&% everything up with the Source.

The Road Warrior

Jurassic Park

I was under the impression you just wanted our favs????

there seems to be a lot of repeating and just grabbing at movies.....

if that's the case, I can list all my Sci-Fi movies that I have collected? that's around 300....

I have about 2600 VHS tapes that I was in the process of transferring to DVD's which is at (oh 600) right now, but I stopped when Blu-Ray came out. So now I have about 56 Blu-Rays also..

Shoot Shadowdriver, if you don't mind, go for it. That would give us quite a list to work from.

I'm in the same boat, I have a walk in closet full of VHS tapes. some of them an Old Moderator gave me, when he switched his massive collection to DVD also. To this day, I'll sit back and laugh at Howard the Duck, then turn around and watch something like Howards End.

Good to see Star Trek VI mentioned.  Probably my fave, although STII:TWOK is a very close second (mainly because of the phaser buzzsaw effect).

The Last Starfighter always grabs my attention whenever it's aired.

Lots of movies above already mentioned, so no need to mention them again.

My next recommend is loosely sci-fi:
Stealth

Dune (1984 version).
District 9
Babylon 5: Severed Dreams (not technically a movie, but definitely one of my favorite episodes).

And, while not necessarily must see movies, my guilty pleasures:
The newer Godzilla and Gamera movies.  At this point though, I don't think we'll see how Gamera fares against the hordes of Gaos monsters alluded to at the end of Gamera III: The Revenge of Iris...

Oh I am a huge fan of the 1990+ Godzilla movies myself.  Don't get me wrong, I liked the old ones also (Toho? ) but shoot from Godzilla 85 or Godzilla returns , they really god good.

The whole way they progressed was awesome.

If we are to mention B5 then we should definately mention a B5 movie. One with battles and heros and villians and a true story...

In the Beginning

Seriously - it sums up a lot from the show, and it is, imho, stand alone enough that if all you ever watch of B5 is this, you'd still be able to follow along. You'd seriously be missing out if you did that, but you would be able to follow along.

I figured that the good Star Treks (2, 4 (yes, 4... Kirk saves the world AND gets the girl. 'nuff said) and 6) were gimmies, so that's why I didn't list them. *shrugs* I'll know better next time.

P.S. Kirks girl in TVH wasn't the whale biologist, it was the Big E
