Rant about American TV and Movies.

Ok, maybe not a Rant per se, as it is an observation.

I call it the Superman Returns casting error, even though it predates that movie by years.

In Superman Returns, we find out that Lois has had a kid, and even if you don't go by the actresses age, she still looks like she would have been 12 years old when she and Supes hooked up.

Now this last year, my wife has been watching a show, called Fairly Legal, and while it's not a bad show, the main Character, she has went to law school, spent 5-10 years as a lawyer, quit, and is now a negotiator for her dead fathers firm. Mind you during this time, she has been married, divorced, and has the wisdom to remain well adjusted in her dealings with her ex husband, a local DA.

All this, and she looks like she just got out of diapers.

One of the earliest cases of this, is going back to one of my favorite shows of all time, the Six Million Dollar Man.

In the chronology of the series, it shows that Steve And Jamie shared a kiss at his High school prom, which is really disturbing, because later episodes would make Jamie 9 years old.

Does Hollywood ever consider these things? I can suspend belief for the most part, but given the rapidity of sex on tv, and the younger our kids are noticing these things, are we sure that we are putting our own Enjoyment of eye candy, ahead of realistic goals for our kids youth?

It's almost like the Barbie Doll situation of years past, where young women tried to get her measurements, which would be all bu impossible.

am I wrong here, that such things disturb me?

Its not that extreme.  Bosworth was 23 at the time of the film.  Under the film's chronology, Superman II was 5 years earlier.

I suppose your right, But that still doesn't account for her already being an established Journalist for the Daily Planet for years prior to Supes 2.

I may just be reading more into it than is there.

Screwing up the ages of actors and characters in Superman has a long history.  In The Adventures of Superman TV (1952–1958) show for example in the 5th Season Lois was 26 (Tomb of Zaharan) Noel Neill was 37.  In the 6th season Clark was 22 (Tomb of Zaharan) which made him 16 when he became a star reporter on The Planet, Reeves was 44. 

I have the DVDs and have watched the whole series.

I think I understand what your saying / asking........Mostly, why are characters who are supposed to be older experienced women being played by young hotties just graduating high school...right..

Exactly ShadowDriver. IT just makes little sense to me.

Don't get me wrong, I like looking at hotties also, But there is plenty of places for them.

Has / does anyone read Tom Clancy.....seen any of his movies?.....

Again using the chronology of either books or movies....

How in the world does Jack a 40 something (Harrison Ford)(Clear and Present Danger (1994)) go from being this expert analyst with a hottie wife 36/38 (Anne Archer)................to.........................

The Sum of All Fears (2002)  which takes place like 8 years later, but makes jack 20 years younger and his wife still in med school?

Sum of all Fears film is not in chronology with the earlier Ryan films, and it is a very loose adaptation of the book.

Its called letting the marketing bozos drum up visions of mega dollars rolling in for the films backers. "Realism" and following the original story line get thrown under the bus in favor of pleasing the demographic with the most cash.

Love to see a film where the marketing guys get hacked and slashed. Or just told to eff off. Or maybe marketing folks are outlawed Along with PR reps. And most of Hollywierds cast of crappiness.

Dang, If I won the mega-millions I'd bank-roll even a medicore documentary of Hollywood being bombed to the stone-age. Better yet a reality show where they're all dumped on an island to go all survivalist on each other.

Rant over. Sorry for the hijacking. Crappy week.

Unlike the book, the Sum of All Fears film is a stand alone.  It is not related to the Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, or Clear and Present Danger.  And when I say it is loosely based on the book, I mean some of the names are the same and a US city still gets blown up.  They also got rid of my favorite character from the book Special Agent Bill Clinton.

You are not wrong.

The instance of it that I find most annoying lately is the Cialis commercial where they're late to the opera, and she has fake grey in her hair to match his. To make her 26 year old body somehow fit with his 50 year old hair. Give me a break.  ::)

The sickness that this is a symptom of, I shall not elaborate on. Suffice it to say that some eastern cultures assessment of it is absolutely correct.

The old saying applies though: "If you don't like the war; turn it off." ;)

BTW, you forgot to mention Without Remorse which is the earliest book in the Ryanverse timeline.

Fact Checking/Continuity has never been Hollywood's strong suit.  Hollywood execs are notorious for going for the buck at the expense of the plot, of course...

The new Star Trek movie is a perfect example of Hollywood execs gone bad.  I will NEVER forgive JJ Abrams for the beer factory/engineering sequence...

And never mind the fact that decades of Trek history were tossed aside in the process.

I see WalMart STILL has several copies prominently for sale.  Other movies rotate in and out, but that one's been on the displays pretty much since the DVD release.

To recycle a quote I quipped as I left the theater after Star Wars Episode III:
"There's two hours of my life I won't get back..."

WalMart did have Enterprise Season 1 for a decent price a little while back, but the subsequent seasons are more expensive, so I haven't picked them up yet... I for one found Enterprise rather enjoyable!  Still pissed about them canceling it just as things were getting really interesting!

At least I still have the Babylon V and Stargate DVDs to keep me interested...

Sorry, got a little off track there.  Sometimes I think Doctor Who has better continuity than many American franchises...

The Dallas shower scene, anyone?

Well personally I think it's all crap anyway!

I think that when a show (Sci-Fi) gets to the point of being interesting they cancel it...why?...I don't know....

I just seem that every show I have ever really felt good about has been canceled! and it's to the point that I just don't care anymore.
that's a sad thing to say but it's true.

Like I stated in the other post [Fun Idea. Best sci fi movie ever.] I have been collecting movies for a real long time and it kills me that when I start a collection like (Stargate SG-1 Season 1) which came in a big box nice package, yada yada yada....then (Stargate SG-1 Season 8) small box, micro packaging...it sorta blows the whole collection.. or when they won't release the rest of a series like King of the Hill / Family Guy ( I know there not Sci-fi, but it's the point that counts).

I don't understand why they keep producing crap and killing off the good shows......
I guess we have become a society of vampire / werewolf loving people and have given up on buck rogers the spaceman.

I guess it's easier to believe in the supernatural then the reality of "theirs nothing on the moon", but I also believe that we have a better chance of extinction from an asteroid then being sucked dry by a vampire..

You have hit the nail on the head, almost. See, we are not the money payoff demographic. 14 and female is where the money is. You'd think that middle aged men would be where the money is, but it appears the real money is in marketing to the children of our generation. They have not figured out a formula for sci-fi that engages that market and probably never will. As I have mentioned, sex and sci-fi just does not work. Sex and vampires does work however.  :(

Does the star of that show look microcephalic / cro-magnon to anyone else? That trend is disturbing. I suppose this is the payback we get for decades of dumb blonde jokes? It is our turn to be objectified and demeaned?
