Ya'know I always wanted to know that myself! it seems really stupid to me anyway.
I mean what is the point of it really.. if you can't read it just play the sound clip that tells you the letters.
but almost everyone is using it nowadays.

So... I'm new here too, would you like to meet up sometime and play online, I have owned all the SFC games for years but I have never played online, most of them have been doing this since birth and they know all the cheat codes and think there better than god..

me...I suck and die in a big explosion..

I've just recently re-installed SFC and SFC2 this week, mostly to fill the voids since I don't have a lot of time to do the miniatures.  I don't have OP and would like to start an EAW server. Unfortunaly my attemps so far have not worked out.  It would probably help more if I knew what I was doing.  But I'm willing to do some online stuff. I'm hoping to get some of my other gaming buddies involved too, but that might take awhile.

Hi, Scharwenka

To get an EAW server to connect to the directory server you'll have to edit the serversetup.gf to connect to the directory servers here. There is a client updater for OP and EAW, run it on the client and copy the settings to your server. That will be the first step to get you up and running. Second, Dynaverse on Vista/7 is currently a no-go (at least on OP) we don't have thorough testing data on EAW which we will actually be able to use shortly...

Clear as mud? I'll add you to the dyna server group, while some posts are outdated, there should be a little insight there.

Hay Bonk :)

that's a great idea for those of us who are noob..

what would you recommend as a server for SCF1, SFC2EAW and OP....I build computers all the time so I can make just about anything.

Please give me a good starting point for what I would need as far as CPU, RAM, Internet connection speed. Etc..etc.

then also, if these guys are up to it... is it better to connect to your server or host at home using the TCP/IP direct connect?

To be honest, the serverkit was written in the era of the Pentium 233MHz and 256MB of ram days... technically that is all it takes. I recommend Windows XP pro as the os (or server 2003 - equiv)

I run the full meal deal (OP server, MySQL, web server with OCI, not right now though) on a cheapy compaq machine I got for $550.

Internet: I recommend cable. If you and your buddies use routers make sure everyone has read their manuals... Note however that a good solid 56k dialup connection for clients will do in a pinch.

If you just want to play quick games with no campaign persistence other than what you record yourselves manually then direct tcp/ip games will do just fine. Probably a good way to start, to make sure everybody can connect directly first, without the complication of a dynaverse server.

Then if your gang wants their own persistent campaign, look at setting up your own Dynaverse server.

Alternatley, if you all manage to get OP you can just play on The Forge (pretty standard setup) if that will do. I will probably be doing some EAW server testing myself in the near future though. I need to get a baseline for the performance of the EAW client on vista.

Great information, and good idea about doing just some of the direct connections first before they Dynaverse campaign.  Plus, unless I can get assistance from a buddy of mine I would have to run the client on the same machine as the game, probably not the best performance.  I would definately be all for doing a campaign if someone else set up an EAW server, even if its just for some testing. I'm not opposed to getting OP, but prices run through the roof sometimes.

Bonk...Thanks alot!!!
Your a great help, I'm glad your here to help us!

Ok...everyone.
here's an Idea, I live in NC so my time is eastern.. I can set up a host game on my system if you guys want to try this...

I'm running vista 32bit with a 2.8 Athlon duel core, I also have cable internet with 10MB download speed.
I'm hard wired to my desktop and my laptop is wireless, both systems have SFC1, SFC2EAW, SFC2OP and SFC3.
currently I've been burning up SCF1 so I'm pretty hot right now :) I have the 1.03 patch and that's all. no mods or anything.

I have no idea what my lag time is or what I ping? but if we can get two or three people together and set a time to try this I would be happy to give out my IP address to everyone.

I would like to try this first with someone to see how to set up the hosting program....
well that's my idea...anyone else got any ideas??
