I have begun working on a Smoke trail rig that I want to use for the Kzinti missile/drone launchers (been playing too much eve, I think of Drones as robotic fighters >.<).

I have some finishing touches to do on the graphics, I have to finish rigging it, and then I have to make the Interface so I can use it in a scene without ripping out my hair.

If you look at SFB covers with Kzinti, the drones leave a "smoke" trail.

Yup :) truthfully, I think the effect is overdone a lot of the time, but I figure a subtle little smoke trail might be a good idea :)

I would agree, considering that drones are suppose to use small warp engines so it wouldn't leave a trail.  But a slight trail is a cool effect anyway.

Well, thats if the follow SFB to the T - which we all know I don't ;).

Combat at warp = dumb, IMHO. Combat should be at impulse. Part of the reason why I made up my own House-ruled game for SFB - Inertia FTW.

question is, does inertia dampeners (that keep the crew from being thrown around in a ship) also dampen inertia on the ship itself?

Hold up....I'm lost already...Impulse engines and warp engines are not a solid fuel burning system (ie--no smoke)....could it be a "contrail"..hot gas mixing with an extremely cold environment...maybe :D
and what does inertia dampeners have to do with anything???? :screwloose:

Yep, just a conversation as FoaS works through his images.  Sometimes we go off to a side, but we usually come back to topic here.  :D

I believe so but in a much more limited manner, still though it would need to otherwise the ships own intertia would tear itself apart, and most things considered I think the interial dampeners will act to dampen all inertia on the ship from hull to the ships core. But it'll be less effective in dampening the inertia of the entire ship over just the interior without much more massive energy output to the dampeners. (i.e. why the Galaxy class can be shown in the episodes to be able to make some pretty sharp turns without its inertia tearing it apart. Id doubt it could without its inertia being dampened to some degree.)
This is just me physically observing though and thinking through my physics over actually writing out and solving the equations for this type of stuff though so ill hold out the possibility im in error.

BTW: regarding the discussion of Inertial Dampers - try reading the Honor Harrington series. The author tends to occasionally go into tech infodump, and tend to like how did his "physics".

Yup - the author is David Weber. First book is "On Basilisk Station"

It's basiically Horatio Hornblower in space. After a few of the books he goes off the deep end a bit, but my interest in the story overrules that.
