Well....sorta like SCM_SFHQ_XC sig...

But I would like to base it on a Tholian BC, I would also like to use the real medals I received while I was in the Navy.

Possibly fighting in an asteroid field against the Kzinti's using web snares in-between some asteroids.

With a cool saying like "peace thru superior defense's" or "stopping the fight before it begins is the best way to win!"

Alright, I've blocked out a "Concept render" showing the bare essentials of the scene. Obviously it doesn't yet have a background, the asteroids, proper lighting, reflections, neato phaser effects or anything else aside from the ships and the web. The final render will be much prettier, I assure you.

I got my new harddrive tonight, so tomorrow's priority is sifting through all my files and organizing them so that I don't have to re-assign textures or when I bring in a new model. Also, this gives my an excuse to finish all the special-effects rigs I had dreamed up - phasers, disruptors, photorps, etc. Even got an idea for a rig for missile effects :).

that looks totally kool....

how can I send you some pics of a few ships (tholian) for your consideration?

do you think it might look better with the kzinti ship coming at you from ether say 10 o'clock or 2 o'clock with a pitch of say -15/-20 deg, roll of maybe +20 deg.

I will trust whatever you decide....

That is a tholian ship. Granted, its Atolm's design, so that may be why it is unusual. I haven't found any better quality tholian models out there, most of them don't have great texturing/design jobs. If you want me to use something else, I can, of course.

So basically, instead of having the camera "over the shoulder" of the kzinti ship, flip it around so it's over the shoulder of the Tholian?

here are a few more, the first one imagine a kzinti ship in the upper left all twisted like I suggested pointing down to the bottom right, then like in the second pic have a few webs locking the asteroids together using the outer points of the web..leaving the middle to be run into.

I kinda like that representation of a web... - the first one - the hexes ... (almost doable with the current engine... take the mechanism of the ppd... etc...)

I wonder how one could apply that feel to the plasma snare and hellbore textures? I saw a mod... I think CJ used it - a hellbore texture with a similar feel.

Not to really add to your to-do list. Just  brainstorming on future possible implementations and associated artwork.

Or maybe the esg effect would do as well?

I don't really know how to do this but I'll try to explane it...

since the web that is being cast is basically a large pulse of energy that slowly dissipates after 32 impulses / 1 full turn from the moment of the cast. I would think it might look like your picture...far right column second one down to start then say after two impulses it would fall into your far right column first picture or maybe even the third column last picture...just pulsating..

To clarify, the ship on the left in my concept render is a kzinti ship, the one on the right is the tholian.

So you want them spun between asteroids, not free-casted? no problem.

Bonk, If we ever do end up getting a tholian web device into SFC, I can definitely make textures for it :).

Yeah. That's the short version of what I was thinking. Sorry for the animated gif-a-thon there...  ;D Things prod my memory in funny ways. (I'll quit my thread hijack here - we've discussed the ideas in a million places.) (and yeah, flip it around for him, add a background and you're 75% there.)

That said, however, as a self-confessed former Thol... it is always most satisfying to watch Romulan plasma spin out in web.  ;D Oh yeah, we need Thols... but they'll have to have F&E style restrictions for game balance. Sorry, I ramble again...

I think the tholians were not added because they ran into problems getting the webs to work right in game.  Same with Andro's, probably problems with the displacement devices and hanger bays.

Hopefully we will try and fix that (down the road)

I have begun working on a Smoke trail rig that I want to use for the Kzinti missile/drone launchers (been playing too much eve, I think of Drones as robotic fighters >.<).

I have some finishing touches to do on the graphics, I have to finish rigging it, and then I have to make the Interface so I can use it in a scene without ripping out my hair.

If you look at SFB covers with Kzinti, the drones leave a "smoke" trail.

Yup :) truthfully, I think the effect is overdone a lot of the time, but I figure a subtle little smoke trail might be a good idea :)

I would agree, considering that drones are suppose to use small warp engines so it wouldn't leave a trail.  But a slight trail is a cool effect anyway.

Well, thats if the follow SFB to the T - which we all know I don't ;).

Combat at warp = dumb, IMHO. Combat should be at impulse. Part of the reason why I made up my own House-ruled game for SFB - Inertia FTW.

question is, does inertia dampeners (that keep the crew from being thrown around in a ship) also dampen inertia on the ship itself?

Hold up....I'm lost already...Impulse engines and warp engines are not a solid fuel burning system (ie--no smoke)....could it be a "contrail"..hot gas mixing with an extremely cold environment...maybe :D
and what does inertia dampeners have to do with anything???? :screwloose:

I believe so but in a much more limited manner, still though it would need to otherwise the ships own intertia would tear itself apart, and most things considered I think the interial dampeners will act to dampen all inertia on the ship from hull to the ships core. But it'll be less effective in dampening the inertia of the entire ship over just the interior without much more massive energy output to the dampeners. (i.e. why the Galaxy class can be shown in the episodes to be able to make some pretty sharp turns without its inertia tearing it apart. Id doubt it could without its inertia being dampened to some degree.)
This is just me physically observing though and thinking through my physics over actually writing out and solving the equations for this type of stuff though so ill hold out the possibility im in error.

BTW: regarding the discussion of Inertial Dampers - try reading the Honor Harrington series. The author tends to occasionally go into tech infodump, and tend to like how did his "physics".

Yup - the author is David Weber. First book is "On Basilisk Station"

It's basiically Horatio Hornblower in space. After a few of the books he goes off the deep end a bit, but my interest in the story overrules that.

In need of Drone Chassis? Come to the FoaS Tactical Emporium. We have whatever model you need to maintain order in your territorial space.

Left to right: Stiletto light missile, Mustang Medium Missile, Scorpion Light Missile (Standard), Scorpion-E Light ECM missile, Maverick Superlight Missile, Havok Superheavy Missile, Raven Heavy Missile.

So these are what the Kzinti are going to be uselessly throwing at the Tholian ship, I think. I finished the Smoke Trail rig, I will start and finish the Engine Flare rig that I have in mind in the morning.

EDIT: I scaled up the Havok a bit, and scaled the Raven down some. I didn't re-render the shot, but trust me, it looks much better now.

not bad drones.  maybe alittle more detail or such on the super light.  Maybe nothing more then a body ring near the center to help hold it in a rack or mount to a fighter.

Not the biggies look like photons [from the movies](probably on purpose).

Can't see those images bonk. Just woke up - so I'm going to have some coffee before I read that other thread.

Yes, the big drones were intended to look like photorp casings from TMP. Personally, i like the idea that Photon Torps are energy weapons. In my own 'verse, what we see being loaded into the Torp Bay in TWoK (and also being fired by the Klingon at the beginning of TMP) are drones! On the Enterprise, the Drones and Photon Torpedoes share the same firing tube, so it makes sense that people would confuse them ;). But again, this is all my version of trek.

Chop, chop... snap to!  ;) ;D I'm on my third coffee and about to make my second shopping trip of the day.

(can't see the images as in not awake enough? not clear enough? or permissions error? - playing with a user media folder there.)

If only SFC would allow for custom weapon entries *sigh* - I would have such a field day if I could script my own weapons into it - All sorts of new Plasma variants, all sorts of new missile types, etc. -shrug- oh well.

Anyways - working on that Drive exhaust rig. Will post a shot when I get somewhere recognizable.

No worries; I've debugged web stuff before, it can be a pain to switch between users to double check permissions. Glad I could help.

Alright, Drive flare is made, but still needs to be rigged with a useful interface.

How did I learn? Lots and time, patience, and Video tutorials :)

I use 3ds Max v9 and Photoshop CS3 on Windows XP sp3.

Take a look at my site: Robinimicon (its in the sig) if you go to Articles, and Video tutorials, I have about 7 or so video tutorials explaining some of my workflows. I will probably end up releasing all these special effect rigs, and if I do I will end up making video tutorials on how to use them. :).

Welp, unfortunately, I've hit a hickup with this little project. Hopefully nothing fatal, but it is annoying, I'll tell you that much. The Smoke Trail rig that I made crashes max everytime I open the original scene, but NOT when i merge it into a new scene. I can't find anything resembling a Log file that max keeps, so I'm uninstalling and reinstalling max 9. Unfortunately, with all the plugins I have this process can take about 2 hours >.< - if that fails, I'm going to have to remake the smoke trail rig (not a big deal, but what a pain).

Nah, I already uninstalled everything and I'm installing max now. I'm probably exaggerating the install time, really. Let's find out :).

EDIT: With a clean install of Max 9, no plugins - it still crashes on open. This leads me to believe that I need to rebuild it from scratch. Installing all my plugins now :)

Mostly. I use a CMS system called PHP fusion, but I installed it, skinned it, and bashed a few bits of code to get what i wanted out of it :)

Update: I think i made that smoke Rig too complex. I've tried three different ways of building it and each time it crashes. Time to dumb it down some.

The smoketrail rig is now fixed and usable. Furthermore, I finished the pulse-weaponry rig. Now I can do things like Pulse Disruptors, Hellbores, Pulse phasers, etc.
