Windows 8 ETA 2 years?

Quote
The revelation came as part of a birthday celebration for Windows 7, with the firm saying that "it will take about two years before Windows 8 [is] on the market." Most of its operating systems typically appear around three years after the previous version, though the Vole, like many software companies, is very cautious about making predictions about upcoming products.

I dunno... first there was 98... I forgave them as it did not last long... then came Vista. Worst windows OS ever.

I am highly disinclined to ever use windows as as primary OS again after this.

We really need a better option, a new option. Not mac, not ms and not linux... something new. Kids today think so fast, lets use them.

I think if they dont go overly crazy like they did in designing Vista after XP, then it should be an improvement on 7 and be a bit better, also assuming they do not rush it out, although I doubt very much any new MS OS will compare to XP Pro. If they go a little too crazy on it though then I wont be looking forward to it. We'll see, its something to tell once they manage to release more on Windows 8.

I have to admit, I liked 98 a lot better then ME or Vista. But then again, I wasn't up on all the OS's and their potential problems at the time.

Somewhere around here, I still have win 95 (on floppy no less), win 98, XP both 32 and 64 bit, and of course my Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Skipped Vista all together.

I can never go back to a 32 bit system now.

95B-OSR2 was my favorite for years.

I have not found a need for 64 bit computing at home yet.

The first place I can personally see needing software that can handle 64 bit data is right here. See the huge post id numbers?

signed int32 max value = 2,147,483,647

current message id = 1,123,013,431  (from the original Taldren forums bugged import - we only have about 750K posts, not 1.12B)

Well, I suppose we have a few years to go - actually we're probably fine and will never need to move to 64 bit software because of this. (half-way there - only about a billion posts to go!)  It is a real pain, I have to re-write every version of SMF to handle such huge numbers. But this is the kind of reason to go to 64 bit. (even though there are ways to do it in 32 bit platforms)

I'm running a 64 bit machine with 32 bit software, like many today.

I forsee a time when bit-depth may not be a limitation like it can be now.

There's a 1 bit ADC algorithm somewhere I'd heard about in audio circles... not sure how it works. At a certain point bit-depth increases will become absurd.

I think my main issue with 64 bit systems came up with gaming, or Multi boxing.

I found that say 2 gig of ram would only allow me 2-3 instances of a game to be run, and with the limitation there on 32bit, I couldn't add more memory. now I have 3 systems, with 4 gig ram each (one a quad core that i love) and it is nothing for me to run 5 man instances all day. The most I have ran, is 8 World Of warcraft accounts at once, in a ten man raid, across all three PC's and never had a slow down at all.

Now for what you are talking about RE: Forums and such, I can definatly understand your point. The memory needs I can't imagine would be near as high.

I wonder if they will finally have the WinFS in this version.  It has been slightly delayed...

I wouldn't worry about this as it will be couple of yrs.I would think of Office 365 as it is in beta now closed.
