Krilos Warbird WIP
« on: August 31, 2010, 04:38:13 pm »
Thought I'd give Atolm's Krilos Warbird a shot.  As you can see, I am have a bit of trouble with the wing.

Make the segmentation of the wings horizontal too, you'll be able to control the shape better that way.

I've ran into similar situations with those types of wings. I suggest looking at them as if they were half of a squashed sphere hit with a wing-shaped cookie cutter.

What i would do , dont do it,  it might be more work than Wicked Zombie's option.
Create a plane or box useing the front view and extrude and scale the sections smaller to fit the profile of the side view. Note roms profile seems to taper thin to the rear so verts each section farther to rear need to be scaled thiner.
You may find some verts will intersect to shape it right you may have to weld some verts to avoid auto smoothing errors. The wing can be done under  :woot: ?200 poly if verts are moved right. This is a real low poly idea though.

Okay, here a second hack at the beastie.  I think it has improved some.  The geometry of those wings is challenging to say the least.

Damn nice  You can cut alot of poly on the bridge and lower sections by welding the verts and still keep the basic shape for sfc. Damn good job here its going rule!

Thanks guys.  I am thinking she will be in the 4000ish poly range.  Does that work well with SFC?

Damn good job ! That poly will work with pcs these days. A 1999/2002 stock SFCOP model would be no higher than 700 poly but cant get that kind of detail for 700 poly.

Personally, my personal limit varies from size class. I try not to go above 500 triangles for fighters, 8k for smaller ships up to CAs, 12k for BCHs and up, 18k for stations, but I have broken this from time to time.

I have always wondered why more modellers don't create Romulan ships.  Without doubt, Atolm has some of the most unique Romulan designs out there.

Some modelers have fleets of them but the lack of ability to texture any quality they dont release.

I can understand that.  Modelling is challenging enough.  Texturing can be a daunting and damn frustrating.

I know for me its more about time and duration of effort. It takes me a long time to get a model out, and so by the time I get to the next one I want to slit my wrists.

Burnout can be a problem for me too. To combat that I try to keep several ship going at once. That way if one get to be too much I move to another. This way I don't get board. I also am a bit of a perfectionest on certain things. Pen working on a Galaxy class mod for A2 on and off for 2 years now and I'm still not satified with the ship yet.

hey Pep, can you get me a 3/4 shot of the mesh in this view:

I'd like to see if I interpreted the shapes correctly... just curious :)

Oh and if you can get me one of the ship banking like the one in the top left-hand corner(all these are for a final drawing I'd like to do) :

thanks mate

Just a thought no offence but the front profile looks thin fatten <-->  it out a little would look perfect. The warps vrs hull look too thick/tall for hull perspective.

I think that's from the render window in the modeler, rather than the actual mesh(adds that fish-eyed effect).

I still have a few minor tweaks to make and how that the holidays are upon us I hope to squueze in enough time to put the wraps on her by News Years day.  Of course, the Klingon Throneship design you resently posted has me thinkinh about chasing shinny pennies.   ;)
