SFC:OP Tourney every Saturday
« on: May 30, 2010, 12:22:12 pm »
I played in an awesome SFC2:OP tournament on Gamespy Arcade last night, hosted by a few Gamespy Wizards (ladder administrators). It was great to see 15+ people online, with 12 actually participating in the tourney. I think they are trying to revitalize this old game, and it looks like it might work. From what I understand, these tournaments are going to be regular, so even if you can only make it once in a while, you know when it's going to be and can jump in if you're free.

Every Saturday at 9:00 PM Eastern in the SFC2:OP Lobby

Here is the calendar for info on past and future events (use the arrows at the bottom to change the month): http://www.gamespy-volunteers.com/calendar/index.php?cal_monthDate=2010-05

This was a friendly event and pretty laid back, so anyone arriving at 10:00 PM could still compete. Last night's tourney was a double elimination format, so even if you lost once, you could have a second chance. The terms were confusing at first (having players agree on BPV/era/map for each match), but it might change to be more traditional (having the terms chosen beforehand by the tournament hosts . . . maybe looking at how the ladder leagues did it in the past would help). As always, it is with the 2552 patch and Firesoul's OP+ 4.0 shiplist.

Hope to see some folks flying in the upcoming weeks!

Round 1 - 369 Adv, map open space medium
Round 2 - 240 late no X, map asteroid belt medium, battlecruiser only -- Hmmm, I wonder what two ships everyone will be flying?
Round 3 - 999, tourney ships, asteroid field medium

You ever thought about having them on GameRanger.

You ever thought about having them on GameRanger.

I gave it a shot (not playing, but just signing in and hosting a room), and it seems cleaner than Gamespy. However, GSA has some advantages in things like user pictures and an unlimited friend list, but most importantly, it is what people are used to. It would be very difficult to get people to switch over in this stage of the game -- and some players who only sign onto GSA every couple of months would be lost when they didn't hear about the change. If we went to GameRanger, we would also lose the support of the Gamespy WIZards, which has been nice recently.

Down the road, though (let's be positive here  ;)) . . . if the future version of SFC can't have its own in-game chat/multiplayer skirmish sign-in, GameRanger could be a good choice.
