Mandible Class
« on: June 19, 2010, 09:26:46 am »
hello Dynaverse community.

I recently was playing SFCII OP and it got me in the mood to build a new model for it. a re-imagined centaur class to be exact. I may need help in getting her in game. I am happy with it so far, do you like? anything i should add to it?
The torpy lauchers will be located on the underside. I have shorter fatter pylons with integrated impulse assembly. Fighter bay will be located to the aft.

I have deleted all images as of 1st October 2010 and you can see the latest ones on page 2 thank you.

I have finished the model.

I decided to not make a torpy area on the bottom because it looked too old fashioned. I want this to look like a lost era ship. between the excelsior and amby class  :) Now I am happy with the look and lines of her she is very aggressive, so will start textures now.

EDIT

Oops the underside

That is looking good

The Photon launcher in the later years was more like a single point and not a big bay by that time. You could very easily make it simular to the Sovergn (SP?) Class and put the launcher in the center of the lower part on the saucer
People always said they wanted the government to listen to them and now the government is listening, taking notes and names...and coming to see you soon!

ok thanks to GotAFarmYet, Torpy is in place, in a dual formation. The structure underneath, is the main shuttle housing. Somewhat like the Capt yacht, but not just for him. Fighters and shuttles come out the rear, but the bottom houses a bigger diplomatic craft, suitable for it's needs.

Model looks good.  I have a feeling though that somehow, for a newb around here, you managed to keep the poly count on this model within range of what most people here would want.

Thanks Centurus. It is clean (one object) and its count is 1958 Poly's. I like to keep them clean and low poly so it is easier on the mapping  :)

Nice gridlines. I would worry about poly-count though. Awesome design nonetheless.

Thanks, It will be added to certain areas of the ship. Its a design cue i'm going to borrow from yourself and adonis with a bit of wicked zombie in there too. markyd showed me all you guys texturing techniques and i'm trying to blend them.

I think I need to reduce the window count. But I do have an itch to make some escape hatches so will make some before i start on the deflector array.

I concour on that window count - it needs to be a breakup, not a constant pattern.

I third that notion. Also that upper blue rim looks like it could do with a chamfer.

Great work on the model mate, I have not had time to get on MSN and chat with ya for a while but its manic here at the minute. Hopefully we can catch up soon.

Great work, keep it going.

This is really nice! On the windows, I think the placement is fine, leave the number and frequency be, but to break it up, I would light up random windows, and leave some dark.

That might do it - but I'm tempted to point at the excelsior and say "Do something like that, but keep the size of windows you are working with"

Same.. if you're going Lost Era, take some cues from the Excelsior.

PS: Lighting windows is a great place to put in family and friends on your textures.. as well as LOLCats, scenes from movies, centerfolds, and David Carradine.  ;)

Long time back, I did a Terran Empire Okinawa with a "mime-in-a-box" (mime in an open to space cargo hold with atmosphere held in with force field).. really lets you play around and have some fun.

You could even take some convention crowd shots if you wanted, you'll be the only one to know.  >=)

I love that idea.

I have rebuilt some new necelles after reading some of the earlyer posts in regard to them, also re shaped the pylon area and now I am working on a new bridge section before I continue with textures.

I would like to do a Klingon ship next.

Thanks  :D

Not going back though, after rebuilding them and getting them meshed into my model properly took a few hours, that and the chamfer I needed for the upper bit of the saucer has caused so much work. Infact an entire re map  >:(

Does look better though with the new bridge too. Will post a pic soon. :smitten:

Ouch,

making that upper rim smooth took too long, after doing it and cleaning up afterward I had to re do my entire uvw map  :(

Its done now and MarkyD was right it looks sooooo much nicer  :smitten: finished the new less bulky bridge too.

Window illum colour looks good, looks like you're starting to add in textures in there?

(edit: Also, just saw the pics of your current status.. looking awesome. :D

The way I think aboutthe stuff I work on is how it'd look with a scene behind it.  Starfields, planet, shipyard, battle.  That kind of idea.  The above shot looking down had me thinking, "planetary rings below the ship", so that's looking fantastic.  :)
