USS Bludhaven, Demphir Class
« on: April 28, 2010, 04:00:53 am »
I started this project around Friday night or so, and with Fallen_Warrior's help with creating the warp engines, the ship is complete.  I'm sure there have been other ships that look like this, cause I doubt I'm the first to make a ship that looks like this, but I wanted to make my own special TOS destroyer.

In case you're wondering, her poly count is just under 7700.

To restate: Mesh by me.  Warp engine mesh by Fallen_Warrior with some tweaks by me.  :-D

Hey FW, I think that those little rods on the sides of the nacelle grilles could be thickened, and the thick pipes towards the aft could use a few more loops for curves, but I'm being pretty particular.

I kinda like the nacelle pipes the way they are.  It gives the ship that little unique touch.  But then again F_W did tell me before the ship was finished that he wanted to make a few tweaks to the nacelles after I had gone in and reduced the polys and cleaned them up a bit, so who knows what enhancements will be made, considering that the poly count is so low.  There will be nav lights on the warp engines though.

But we do need a mapper, and a quality mapper too.  We can handle texturing on our end.

Poor Poor underwear

Yeah, I found out home made chicken soup, green grapes, and chinese food don't mix.  And it's been so long since I last wore that pair, it's already developed an intelligence.  Unfortunately, that's the only pair without holes, so I need the cleaned.

Yeah, but imagine what SF has to go through.  There's a reason I kept that pair in an air tight drum.

Na.  They were afraid I'd start a war and win it.  Can you imagine France winning a war?  They wouldn't know what to do.  The thought scares them.

Ok, question, what's the best way to UVW Unwrap the rim of a saucer.  I kinda need a step by step process.

Short Answer: Cylinder Mapping

Long Answer:
1) Grab all the edge polies and do a cylinder mapping
2) Make sure you rotate the gizmo so that the seam is in a logical place (i do it so that its in the rear, by the impulse engine)
3) Scale the UVs vertically so that the UVs are the proper proportion to themselves, instead of being really really tall.
4) Scale the UVs by-corner so that the entire saucer rim UVs are three times as wide as the saucer top UVs (this is to make sure the UVs are in proper proportion with each other, too)
5) Break the saucer rim UVs into quarters and fit them into the single UVW space (you can use the vertex snap to align them perflectly)

Have you got that? or should I do a video tutorial?

Thanks to F_W, there's an update to announce.  The deflector is coming along incredibly well, and we've discovered a happy accident in terms of mapping combined with texturing that we're gonna work with.

Some more WIP images of the textures.  Right now what you see is the first steps of setting up the hull color.
