XP heeeeelp
« on: December 16, 2009, 12:08:37 pm »
I'm running windows XP sp2 trying to get SFC II EAW to work. version 2002 works about as good as it did on 98se (buggy) directx 9.0c. i tried upgrade 2033 and 2036 and same thing happens in both. Yes im using starfleet2 to launch game. What happens is start new campaign and the progress bar hangs up almost at the end. i just wait till screen changes to next pic then click. the map just wont load. is completly empty except hex ship is in. keyboard command + - dont work on map but work everywhere else in game. Can anyone help me, want to play this game again. dont have OP and not interested in SFC III (i play SFB i want 6 shields for example) did not see this problem looking through forum. please somebody heeeelp

Best to uninstall, delete folder, completely disable all anti-virus (AV) for the re-install, install from CD 2002, patch 2002-2036, edit shortcut, install directory server fix and ezINI, then re-enable AV.

Or you could just try disabling AV first and see what happens. Oh, do you have old campaign db save files from previous patches still present? If so, delete them.

The other thing is that you'll want to add firewall exceptions for StarFleet2.exe and the Microsoft Directplay Helper. Or just disable the firewall while playing.

Are you using MS distributed video drivers or drivers downloaded from the manufacturer?

P.S. Apologies for your troubles in registering yesterday. Thanks for your patience through the recent update.

yes ive uninstalled, deleted directory, disabled AV, reinstalled from disk, applied patch 2002-2036, then run from starfleet2 instead of SFC2. Everything else in the games seems to works, keyboard commands work everywhere else in the game. its just for some reason the map refuses to load. 2002 worked on my machine except one of the special missions (can't remember which one) would make it lock up so you couldn't get past that point. im running drivers from manufacturer. will directory server fix and exINI fix this or should single player game work anyway. really like this game and its hard to find people to play Star Fleet Battles

Have you tried different video driver versions? This sounds sort of like an old issue that used to come up with EAW. Don't go too crazy trying to work it out until someone else posts. Hopefully others might have some more ideas for you.

Running an odd desktop resolution? Try a standard one... oh wait... bit depth is coming back to me... in some cases it helped to match the desktop bit depth to that of the game (16bit). Also if your video driver has a setting to stretch or center lower res fullscreen apps then set it to center (not stretch).

One thing to check is:

Right click on the SFC icon, choose properties.  On the property screen choose the shortcut tab.  Does the "Start in" field have the directory of the game or is it blank?  It should be the game directory.

After trying that you might try the Compatibility tab and try setting it as an earlier OS version and see if that helps.

Tried all the above + some stuff saw in other post. Been playing "without a map" to get more info. The map 'reveals' itself as you move across it and game plays normally, but when save game, map is empty again in saved game. also have audio clicks from time to time that wasn't in version 2002. Yes old P4 Compaq Presario has SB Live and i turned down hardware axceleration. Havnt upgraded to SP3 cause i did and makes THIS machine not work. version 2002 actually runs more smooth on this machine than the patches. thinking about going back to 2002 and just failing the mission that makes it crash when you win it. (other friends of mine have problems with SP3 on their machines also). Or make the clicks go away and just play 'without a map' thank you guys very much for listening to my problem and trying to help. Anything new on SFC4

Launch the game from the Starfleet2.exe game file, not the SFC2.exe.. the SFC 2.exe is bugged.

Right click on the shortcut.

Make sure the Path shows that it is pointing to the Starfleet2.exe and not the SFC2.exe.. The SFC2.exe is bugged. (The shortcuts by default point to the bugged file, which is why YOU NEED TO CHANGE IT). If Orion Pirates, same goes for the StarfleetOP.exe.. the SFCOP.exe file is bugged.

Also make sure that the Start In path is pointing to the folder that holds the Starfleet2.exe.. if the start in folder is not correct, this will Cause game bugging as well. (same for StarfleetOP.exe if for Orion Pirates)

Usually I just tell people to go in and find their Starfleet2.exe, right click and select Copy, find spot on desktop and right click and select "Paste Shortcut" .. same for the StarfleetOP.exe in Orion Pirates. Makes it so much easier and does the same job as above.

As far as your game being corrupted, it is possible with a power outage that you game could have corrupted, just like any other software including your Operating system.

Without personally looking at they computer I wouldn't be able to tell, however launch the game from the proper EXE.. delete the current campaign and start a new one afterwards and see how it plays.. if it doesn't load using this method.. then maybe a full reinstall is in order.
