Oh, sorry Nemesis. I did forget you are on dial-up. Friggin 2010 and we can't get coax and fiber run across the country.
I COULD get high speed.
The local cable company offers it (my parents have it about a mile away). They however adjust the price by whether or not you subscribe to cable TV too and I don't (can't stand commercials) so the price is higher than I like.
The phone company keeps trying to push wireless on me but I don't LIKE wireless, not secure enough for my home. The roaming wireless might be nice but they seem to all be based in Starbucks. I find the smell of coffee distasteful so that isn't interesting. Their "free" anti virus, firewall software etc isn't of interest. I doubt that their "free help" in setting up your browser and E-Mail extends to Firefox and Thunderbird. They also don't seem to want to tell what the price is after the "introductory" price expires.
The phone system substation is just over a block away so I COULD get DSL. It has been a few years since I looked at that. Their "support" web site was pure IE only. A friend who had it informed me that it was Windows only (their software needed as they didn't use TCP/IP between your house and the substation). Needless to say I wasn't interested in letting their software on my system or their installers touching my system.
I may get it when my current year of dial up ends (paid till the end of August) as my router with serial port died and can't be replaced. The only machine I have that is old enough to support a serial modem is the Windows XP Dell (free from my former employer) and it stubbornly refuses to see both the internet and the local network at the same time so it won't share the internet connection with my other machines. I could probably solve it but it is too annoying reestablishing the current setup between attempts.
Meanwhile when I REALLY need or want high speed I use my parents or the local libraries wireless with my netbook (Christmas present). Dial up speed rarely bothers me. Especially since most flash are annoying ads anyhow.
