So... Uh...
« on: March 29, 2010, 07:03:34 pm »
Has STO killed things here? Is that where everyone has gone? Sure, sure... I have not played SFC in ages, but that doesn't mean I don't miss reading your banter here.

Got pretty interested in the SFC4 idea, actually. But there seems to have been little headway made on that front of late.

Anyhow... thought I would check in and see where everyone has run off to.

what's killed things here is that the Dyna doesn't run on Windows Vista or better.  There are so few of us still on XP.

Yeah, it seems that way about the XP bit.  I'm still around but I never seem to catch anyone on GSA...

Yeah, GSA has been quiet. There might be a couple people, but in the past couple of months, I haven't seen any of the 6-8 or more people that we usually had on Friday and Saturday nights. I think STO might have had something to do with it, because a new fleet was made for that (and many of the GSA regulars were in that new fleet).

The reason I believe GSA is quiet is because they no longer have free subscriber.I would use gameranger anyway supports all past Star Trek Gaming titles.

Really? OMG. I better get SFCDirect in shape then!

No wait a minute... what about Dynaverse accounts, I guess I'm gonna have to check this out. As my usual SOP for a new Dynaverse login is to register a new free account with the latest gamespy arcade client. They always bury the free links deep - let me check this out.

Gameranger supports SFC? Must check that out too! Is it free? Free is good.  :)

what are you talking about, I was on GSA last Friday.  Also, you can still play SFC with GSA on vista.  You just can't use the dynaverse.

Yup. Vista done it.  The funny thing is that I think MS might actually be interested in the effects of Vista/7 on this community if the right people there saw the situation. Unlikely though.

I had hoped to get the opportunity to build a new Dynaverse based on EAW that would run on Vista/7, but hope is fading fast.

At this point, my best hopes lie with Wine and Linux. I have this idea for an SFC Live CD. If we can get SFC working all the way on Linux then all we need to do is build a boot disk and everyone can play again (though modding will be a bitch).

If we ever get an open source game built (totally independent of SFC) we must remember this lesson. Directx kills applications. It's like building a time-bomb into your product.

I don't think using directx in a game we control the source too, or open source would be a killer as we can update as DX changes.  But on a game made and released to fend for it's own, yeah a killer.

You get an one popup when you first enter the lobby, and an occasional one after you exit a room.  Most people can live with that.
