:smackhead:  Thats right I forgot the American version in the 1960s couldn't give a black woman command rank.  I guess I'll never win in Trek Trivial Pursuit.  :smackhead:

In Balance of Terror she is in Red.

One of the conflicts with Enterprise is it is specified that in the Earth - Romulan war there was no ship to ship visual communication and the weapons allowed for no captives.

At what point during Enterprise did they have ship to ship visual communication with the Romulans?  I don't remember the line about no captives, but If I remember correctly, Romulan policy was self destruct rather than surrender.

In Enterprise the Romulans knew they were descended from Vulcans.  Logical, to remember your ancestry.  And the Romulans had designs on Vulcan, had they let Earth know the Romulans were off-shoots, who knows how Earth may have reacted.  The only thing Enterprise screwed up with the Romulans was the cloaking device.

Off the top of my head I believe that Shran of the Andorians was seen on screen.  I think also the Vulcans and maybe Klingons. I'll put it on my list of things to check.

Just a quick check.  Episode 3 Fight or Flight where they encounter a ship where the aliens are dead and being drained of chemicals the rescue ship has screen to screen visual with Enterprise.

Episode 5 Unexpected.  Where the cloaked ship is riding in the wake of the Enterprise and Trip gets pregnant.  Screen to Screen with the Klingons.

The only thing Enterprise screwed up with the Romulans was the cloaking device.

Balance of Terror - The Bird or Prey had "simple impulse power"

In Enterprise the episodes with the shapeshifting ship had Warp 5 ability.  It could tune its weapons to appear to be Tellarite and Andorians for sure and probably others.  It was able to destroy an Andorian ship with one attack with weapons that being tuned to appear Tellarite were probably working below par.  Technologically they should have defeated Earth.

The 2nd last episode takes place several years before the Earth Romulan war.  The last episode immediately after it but the war is never mentioned even though it should have been a primary impetus to the alliance forming at the end of the episode.

power is different than drive.  Just because you have a Warp Drive, doesn't mean the ship is powered by it.  In Enterprise almost everything was tied into the Impulse Engines.  Which would have made the ship an Impulse Powered Ship.

I'm not convinced that the dialogue in balance of terror ruled out earth having visual communication, but if there was a retcon, it would probably because in the age when video conferencing is not unusual, it would have seemed odd for a 22nd century Starship to not have that sort of capability.  In many ways, it is like shifting Kahn a couple of decades into the future.

I agree in part. I don't recall Enterprise being all Impulse powered.  Can you cite an episode where they state it?

I have always taken it that "Warp Power" was used to mean matter - antimatter and "Impulse Power" something more primitive, perhaps fusion.  If so Enterprise had warp power.

The Warbird of Balance of Terror seemed to move significantly slower than the Enterprise (1701).  Perhaps no faster than the shapeshifter warp 5 ship that was against the NX01.

I know they tied their "Phase Cannons" into the Impulse Engines, and while they used EPS systems that shouldn't have been available until the early 24th century, when ever they lost Warp Drive, they still had most of their systems.  As to an instance where they actually state that the ship runs on Impulse.  It may have been when they were composing the letter to the school children in season one, but I can't be sure on that, its been five years since I've seen that episode.  I don't even know if they ever come out and say it directly.

There's just no way the Warbird has only Impulse Drive, because it would take decades just to reach the Neutral Zone, if that were the case.

Just found my copy of the Official(the one seen on screen in BoT) Romulan Neutral Zone.  The Zone is 12 light years in width.  (as opposed to the 750 Parsecs that Franz Joesph's Peace Treaty established)

Read a ST book that explains the non warp ships better. (tho non canon it makes sense).

the ships actually have warp drive but sensors are not advanced anough to scan ahead while moving at warp speed.  So they have to do short jumps.  Scan a distance, then do a warp jump.  Then rescan, jump again.  makes it work like BSG jumping in a way.  But because of the low level scanning warp movement in combat, or continuously would be suicide as you can't see if you were going to hit something. The jumps were each long distance, but just not a continuous warp)

A better explanation is that Balance of Terror was an early episode, and they still hadn't fleshed out what exactly impulse power was yet.
