Vista user  :(
I  need help  to figure out why i get a rundll32 crash when i open the "stocksfc2 models folder" it also happens with some of my own models but not all of them , its wierd. I thought it was a gmax export problem but its not. The unmodifyed just installed stock sfc2 models folder when i open it start to scrool down it crashes and restarts explorer ? ANyone else have this issue? Or have a fix other than more $  ::)   I would like to finish my sfc2 mod but if i cant access the models folder i might as well quit the project.

Good lord no.

You could try something like this:
http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/freecommander_portable
or
http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/xenon_portable

Or I could explain in great detail how to get the vista explorer to behave more like the windows explorer, but it is a lengthy exercise and does not necessarily produce consistent results.

Have you tried running the vista explorer as admin? Or install EAW to some location outside of the dreaded vista "Program Files" folder. Create a folder on the root of the harddisk called SFC. You control this folder, not vista. Install all your SFC applications to it. This will save you many headaches.  Or you could go C:\Programs\SFC\* and then install everything you ever install to C:\Programs instead of the dreaded "Program Files" folder. (uninstalling all the old installations first of course...)

Isn't Vista great?

Vista really is badly borked. Just take a look at the task scheduler and the myriad of default scheduled tasks.  :skeptic:

Ive done the run in admin mode no change at all ive even shut down rundll32 but still get the crash when i open the model folder.
I am wondering if the .mod file got hacked some how or has some secret issue  :hoppin: that makes it crash.
I get the crash when i open models on the desktop also im not sure that matters any , one model crashes then another one is fine. Personal models so far not stock sfc, i havent found one yet, i do get the issue trying to view the sfc2 models folder the second i start to scroll down it crashes.  I have pulled a # of stock models to desktop to see if any of those crash but so far the ones i pulled are fine. This is also not a viewer error it happens when i click to open the folder about 1 to 2 seconds in it crashes.

Try setting the explorer to details view and try to make it stick for all folders (near impossible for vista).

I bet vista is crashing trying to make thumbnails of pcx textures or optimised bitmaps. Plausible, as some textures may crash vistas "thumbnailer" while others do not?

edit: I tested my theory (however on my system aero is off and I have all SFC apps installed to C:\SFC\*), and what I observed was that when switching from "details" to "large icons" in the EAW models folder and scrolling down to the bottom - it maxed out one cpu for about 2 seconds - but did not crash. However, the timing and symptoms are very close to what you describe.

You could try scanning your models folders (or whole system?) with A-Squared Free Portable to check for malware:
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/stick/
(can just be extracted to a folder, does not have to be on a usb stick, but its handy to have it on one.)
However if you scan the whole system with it, be aware that it is very suspicious of everything and will flag many items that probably are not of any serious concern. The trick is with these apps is that the average user does not know enough to filter out the false positives.
