Smoking voids your warranty.

Unless you've just arrived in 2009 on a time machine, you know that smoking isn't good for you. Did you know, that smoking isn't good for your computer, either? It's true, at least according to Apple. Two readers in different parts of the country claim that their Applecare warranties were voided due to secondhand smoke. Both readers appealed their cases up to the office of God Steve Jobs himself. Both lost.

Heard about this...havent seen enough to confirm...if so...apple just pissed of a few million customers...

Way to go...

Also if true...and if it stands some kinds of legal challenge.....expect a zillion other manufacturers of all kinds of things to follow suit...car companies could theoreticlly void your warranty if you smoke in it...

Well..as a computer Tech.. I can confirm that cigarette smoke is detrimental to a computer.. just as is dust.

Nicotine and tar can build up on the circuits and create pathways that create shorts.

Dust has silicates which can build up on the circuits creating paths that can short..

both can cause the system to over heat.. however it takes a while for the nicotine to build up on the circuitry.. unless you have an ashtray on or right next to your PC or you blow the smoke into the system intakes.. then the Nicotine and tar can build up faster.. but not enough to fry a system until just after the warranty expires. (about 2 years)

I could understand if they were claiming that the smoke/byproducts were the cause for the failures. What they are saying though is that the computers are a health hazard to the techs working on them. "Bio-hazzard", is the term they used. Seems to me they would need some science to back this up and to also put it in their warranty that smoking residue found in your computer will void the warranty.

You mean like something might be growing in it.

I don't smoke by my computer but I wouldn't say this is a problem if you look at all the TV and Stereos back over 40 to 50 years. There was no problem with them involving smoking. This is people being paranoid of smoking like those who won't rent to to smokers because I am going to get it to.What about all those parents who smoked around them?I would say alcohol is worse for a computer than smoke.I know there is tar and nicotine in my 30+ year old stereo but it still works like charm better than some new stereos.

I don't smoke by my computer but I wouldn't say this is a problem if you look at all the TV and Stereos back over 40 to 50 years.

Two differences:

1/ The PC has a fan (or fans) actively drawing air into it whereas a TV or Stereo does not.

2/ Proximity.  The PC is a lot closer and some have the ashtray immediately in front of the machine.

This maybe true for those that sit long enough by their computers smoking.I would say that more sit in front of their TV and Entertainment Centres. It a lot like you monitor it never get cleaned.

I sit in front of my computer to get away from smoking as it has helped cut down on it.

I have a PIII full tower I built in 1999 and smoked like a champ in front of for 10 years. (cleaned it out about every 2 years) It still runs tickety-boo. But then, I built it, not Apple. Major difference. Every component built by a manufacturer that specialises in that type of component and provides a 3 year manufacturers warranty. I've never had to make a warranty claim on gear purchased by this rationale.

Apple: masters of the unmountable floppy. (thus the floppyless iMac)

Where's my iIt post? Just about time to drag it out again... ;)
