Changing background and adding more stars to starfield
« on: October 26, 2009, 04:59:56 pm »
Hello everyone!

I was wondering where do I go to change the nebulas and where to i go to change the starfield?

SFC3 starfield is just laughable, it looks like the night sky seen from a big city, you can count the stars with your hands.

I was looking to make it something more on the likes of BC.

And another thing. Why isn't there any GUI mods? It is quite obvious that a LCARS mod would be good.

Thanks!

I'm not sure in SFC3, but in SFC1, 2, and OP it was under the GameRoot/Assets/Models/Space

No one has done a GUI mod because right now it cannot be done. the interface graphic data is stored in the encrypted q3 file. Marstone is working on getting into it, but its a Work in Progress.

working on a few image conversion functions right now.  Not really hard, just don't seem to have the time I need to work on it..  (seems two jobs, a family, and trying to get 4 hours of sleep a night just don't leave much free time)

I am still hopefull for a christmas release of something.

the space model assets can be found in assets/models/space  there are 32 .mods associated with the space maps.  Also, not all the pictures in the folder are used.

I expiramented with actually putting a starfield in to OP, but ran into a few problems.  OP actually does support transparencies, but only in the space.mod files.  the problem is that once you put in a space field backdrop you run into a few problems with putting in nebulas and whatnaught (ie transparency work wonky).  You also need a pretty damn huge space field image in order for it to work, (4096 x 4096 i believe)

Oh, i see. I did actually opened the space.mod file with Milkshape 3D but was unable to make anything out of it, it looks confusing (But then again, i'm not much of a modeller at all). It is a shame that the guys at taldren decided not to put in a full starfield.. i am sure that it could be done at that time, since it was done in Bridge Commander.

I suspected as much, searched every folder in the stock game and found nothing related to it, only this .q3 file i have no idea what could be.

I know a little of what you mean, although i have no family of my own i did had work+college, although i was fired two months ago probably because of the economic crysis. At the moment i am studying SAP (aka the Blue Beast) by my own so i can get a new job, but i do like to toy with SFC in my free time.

If you managed to access the q3 file but just don't have the time to make a interface mod, just send the interface graphics over and i can work on them :) Would be more than happy to.

Well, have about 80% of the Q3 figured out.  I haven't tried to see if my utility to pull assets from the Q3 works for the SFC3 version.  I know they have a few different assets in the SFC1 Q3, I assume they would have done the same in the SFC3 version to have some of the updated stuff.  Once I get something running it should be fairly easy to add anything needed to make it work on the SFC3 version also.

I can pull all the sprites out of all of them tho.  Working out details of how to make an in between file for putting in new ship UI's in SFC:OP.  (SFC3 they made easier)  Need the in between format so modders can make the addins, and someone can make sure an up to date Q3 is available for download with all new ship UI's added, or you would have a bunch of Q3's set to work with only some shiplists.

A really big thing that might slow down development is I get Fallout3 for my computer this week, and I have the G.E.C.K so a new thing to learn how to use and waste time on.

Indeed, i have Fallout 3 and what i can say about it is that these days developers do realize (more than yesterday at least) that the more moddable a game is, the longer its lifetime.

But alas, it will take time before everyone of them make their games as moddable as DOOM (yes, i mean DOOM from the nineties)

If you have SFC3 the STOCK space mod files can be used as a replacement for the SFC: OP space mod files. There is a SFC3 files TNG update that updates the space textures and fixes a few errors IIRC.

You mean the other way around, no? I do have SFC3, and it is its background that bothers me. Although i have read somewhere that someone tweaked the space7.mod file and managed to add more stars on the background, but i cannot find that modified file :(

C  Jones made 2 install files for replacing the space images/models in OP/EAW. they are about 4 mb each. they are a big improvment over the stock files.

Indeed, I have this link: http://www.frost-works.com/cjmods/downloads/SFCOPSceneryMod1.exe but it is broken  :-\

Anyone with the file could upload it to 4shared?
