Key Retrieval
« on: October 21, 2005, 03:42:13 am »
I've got the same ol' sob story. Old CD, no key. I understand why you don't want to give up your keys (although I have no intention of multiplay, so give it up if your game) but surely someone knows how a key can be retrieved. It has to be somewhere other than a flimsy jewel case, doesn't it? Like in my regkeys somewhere? In the setup files on the CD? Where are the braniacs when I need 'em?  :)

If it was installed on a system the CD key can be found in the registry here:

EAW:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WON\CDKeys

OP:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GameSpy\CDKeys

They are both there as hex, so you'll need to decode them or you can export the key and then merge it on the target system.

Help I can't find OP:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GameSpy\CDKeys except if I wish to edit the expiration date for the  authentication code. I have a laptop that runs on Windows XP. Could you please help it's been years since I could Play Sfc.

You're not quite making sense here. CD Keys for SFC do not expire.

If SFC was never installed on a system then the registry key mentioned above will not be present in the registry. Those instructions are only for cases where you already have a valid CD key for OP or EAW on a system but have lost the CD case or something and you wish to install it on another system or wish to recover the key before reinstalling windows on the system.
