Just to throw a wrench into this:

1.) Marstone--Sometimes a failing sound card will exhibit some of the same symptoms as a failing video card
2.) Pesty--see above :D
3.) Candle--I out cert you. So what. That and $1.25 gets me a cup of coffee at Denny's.
4.) Pesty--see above. :D

hmmm, a failing sound card can use up my video memory?  Wonder how that works.

Not so much that it uses the memory as it causes a false error message to be kicked out.

Way way back I was given a game that wouldn't run.  It kept kicking out sound card error messages.  I tried every sound card setting possible and disabled much other stuff to let the sound card be configured in odd ways to get around it.  Eventually it turned out to be the mouse driver was not compatible with the game (the standard MS driver delivered with Windows which is totally unjustifiable in the game developers) and the error message was just totally wrong.

don't really get an error memory, but the logs in the game show that the video memory is going down.  Then later it crashes out when it hits zero.  Will do alittle testing while I wait for payday.

Have a problem with a program not releasing assets on my video card.  When my son plays (actually tests) a mod he is working on for Dawn of War, Soul Storm, after a few times the video card has used up all video memory (logs of the game show the available memory slowly going down with each time it is run).

Question is, is there anyway to reset the cards memory without a full reboot of the computer?

The card is an old Radeon 9500.

thanks.

Has your son tried to chat with anyone in the games online forum?  I'm thinking that he might get some answers there.

As for the issue at hand I don't think this has anything to do with DirectX and everything to do with the mod.  The mod should have access to the video card just as DirectX does.  If this was an issue with DirectX, then other programs would be having the same issue.  One sure way to find out would be to not run the mod for a day or two and see if the video card memory still fills up.  Anyway that is my 2 cents worth.  Hope this helps.

yes he has been in contact with the rest of the mod team.  He is the only one having trouble with the system.  As for other programs having trouble.  SFC crashes out also.

Going off Toasty's tangient..

what sound system is the game using? Does the Mod change Music Format or introduce new music?

For instance.. if the game uses Miles Sound System.. there are many DLL's for MSS..

on Vista / Windows 7.. MSS DLL may not work correctly and cause a cascade memory leak as well.. which may be tied into DirectX which could give a false reading into the Video card.

as example.. KOTOR and KOTOR II games

KOTOR MSS DLL works fine on Vista / Windows 7, however the MSS DLL in KOTOR II causes KOTOR II to shutter and play without sound.

by replacing KOTOR II MSS DLL with KOTOR MSS DLL, KOTOR II plays flawlessly.

Toasty may be on to somthing there..

but again as Rod stated I would look at the Mod again, unless other programs are causing errors on your system when on other machines they work fine..

to me it sounds like time to replace the machine with something more modern.. but besides that, I think that the Mod is overtaxing the Vid card.. and referencing SFC and crashing, if it is with a Mod installed.. again my OP Enhancement Pack has high poly / res models that your card would be hard pressed to handle smoothly.

Different things to consider and think about.

no new sound or sound DLL's

One DLL for the video system (has been removed), but the system was acting odldy before that.

Hard to say if many other games do this (what is an easy was to see how much video memory is available?  DOW has that in a log file so we can track it there).

SFC:OP does have the enhancement pack, never noticed a problem with it before.
Last time SFC crashed out on me was in game, when going into a combat.  It crashed loading the battle (basicly when it switches from a 2d game to 3d)  This was also after DOW was balking so I jumped into SFC to see if it would work.

Problem is we doin't do alot of gaming on the system anymore so this could have been going on for along time and normal reboots have kept us running.

I still feel the video card has gotten weak (had a heat incedent earlier this year, power supply fried and some system fans also quit.  So the Video card could have gotten heated up)  So it is possible it is just giving up the ghost.

Will see about poping the sound card out and dropping back to system sound to see if that might be it.  Is interesting to see all the possible things that can cause a small error like this.  Things to file away in case I need it later.

AS I am waiting for payday so I have some cash it might take alittle while.  But if you send me $120 I will get the new video card.  If it doesn't fix the problem I will buy you your beer.  ;D
