MASSIVE problem in IE8 with Win7 RC
« on: September 30, 2009, 10:23:28 pm »
Maybe you guys can answer this.  IN XP with IE8, you can delete ALL the cookies via the Temporary Internet Files Folder, however I am positive that it's not deleting them all in Win7 which could be one big reason I'll give it the finger.  When I sign on to certain sites, even though I've already deleted the cookies, they still register me.  Note this is not a problem when I've deleted cookies via Firefox, IE7, or IE8 in XP.

Anyone know how to REALLY get rid of all the cookies?

I haven't figured out a perfect fix, or where they are keeping the cookies, but somehow with the preserve favorites website data in Win7 and IE8 combined, have those cookies in a separate spot.  I believe if you make sure the default check there is unchecked, it may delete the cookies, don't know if it's all of them however, because as I said, I can't figure out where they are keeping the data.

Talk about trying to make the OS non-user friendly as far as control of your data and computer goes.

You just have to trust that Microsoft knows better than you do what is good for  you and how you should use your computer.

Have you considered it could be  flash cookies?  Have you "locked down" flash on the XP machine but not the Win7 one?

I actually don't have flash even loaded on this machine as far as I know right now...ensures no surprises from Adobe.

Note to Linux bashers:  Some pro Microsoft Linux bashers like to harp on the fact that rare circumstances can force you to the command line when Windows NEVER does.  Here is an example of the "Latest and Greatest" from Microsoft forcing you to do exactly that for a very mundane reason.

Thank you Toasty for this excellent example.

Eh, with IE browser open, I just go into Tools, Internet Options and look down Browsing History and click Delete button

In the small window that pops up, I uncheck PRESERVE FAVORITES WEBSITE DATA and check everything else and click OK.. everything is gone including Favorites data.

Alternatively you can also enter Internet Options from your Control Panel window.

Normally I don't delete Favorites data.. it makes it a pain in the ass going to my favorite forums.. I usually just change passwords, which windows will update for you the next time you sign into the page..

Nemesis, you are not forced to run a command line to get rid of data.. the mechanic is built in.. the problem is that someone is not use to usig the Internet Options tool of IE and as such thought MS is "secretely storing" their information... which they are not. read up for how to remove all cookies from yur system.

You just have to Learn how to use IE correctly.

The same can be said about virtually everything in Linux an end user might need to do.

Toasty is very knowledgeable of Windows yet he still had to jump to the command line.  How could a typical end user do any better?

I already did that, and unchecked the favorites.  However there is no way to verify overall, as those cookies are NOT KEPT in the Temporary Internet files folder, OR the History folder, OR a specific cookies folder.  It's a hidden file actually from what I can tell, which is very very interesting why they would keep it from you.

If you note, my second post I already stated that this seems to do it, but that it really provides NO verification that was actually happening.  I DO have indications that even with it unchecked (The Preserve Favorites option unchecked in IE options)  it doesn't actually delete everything...interestingly enough.

Thanks for the help Toasty.

I had the same thought as Nemesis.

In light of Pestalence's comments, my comments are that it seems that MS has the recent tendency to take controls/features that have been named the same thing and have been in the same place for the last 10 years, then rename them and move them somewhere else in the interface (my main vista bitch). Perhaps it is in response to AutoIt type malware?

I am so glad that Pestalence and Toasty0 are here to keep us up to date!

You assume incorrectly Nemesis. I was thinking of the person I was giving the advice to and figured he is knowledgeable enough to use the "command prompt".
