shoot me some ideas
« on: September 22, 2009, 04:45:56 pm »
I built this just to do it, but I like the shape, and the lower pic is the inside of the engine, now Im lost on direction here, I was thinking coping my engine design onto 2 other engines and add them onto pylons on each side and maybe a lower hanging hanger deck, but would like some community input. The idea here is a 2020 Deep Space Exploration ship, experimental grav plating, no armarment. The Hanger would hold 2 shuttle like space craft, dressed in NASA Livery. Stated Goal to travel to Alpha Centuri and start a colony. Max speed is 89,937,737.4m/s or 3/10 FTL using ION engine, powered by a Fusion reactor. Life support systems include a large hydropnics area with trees ect to act as natural air recylers, and lifestock for meat. Reactor powered by collected space debries and solar dust (havnt worked out an idea for that) Travel time anticipated to be 61years, but the ship never returned home, presumed destroyed. But I want more ideas on what to add to the model itself, still working on texture ideas in my head.

Just a break down, the front section is the command module, designed to seperate if the reactor breach's included cryostatis chambers. Middle section is the main area, hydroponics, recreation, science labs, main reactor. Rear cone is the engine assembly

I want to give a rouge estimate of 120 total crew 60men, 60 women all unmarried upon launch, the idea is because of trip length the crew would reproduce and then train there children to operate the vessel

First of all, this is a great start for doing a basic O'Neill cylinder colony ship

I wouldn't make the ship as large as a standard O'Neill cylinder (5-6km long), but you can use the same basic principle.  Main cylinder would have some interior space (probably towards the front) where you'd have glassed openings for your greenspace/hydroponics bay, and maybe use that front quarter to build a combination reflector/solar panel setup sort of similar to the picture.  Don't have the panels go all the way down the ship, just attach them to the back of the front quarter and extend them forwards to reach just past the front of the main cylinder, but short of the front capsule pod.

Towards the back third, that's where I'd put your hanger, command deck would be in the front capsule pod of the ship.

At least, that's where I'd go with it.. ;)

how does hanging 2 more engines one on the left one on the right sound? Also adding in a lower hanger deck on the belly in a pod? Also because I want this to be NASA im considering going with the white paint with NASA and USAF hull markings. Also need a name besides rocket ship lol

If you're going for a NASA design, I'd bring the engines a bit closer to the hull, grab a look at the engine layouts for the Shuttle/external tank/SRB and Saturn V layouts.  Also, I'm assuming that this would be built on Earth (given current NASA plans, they don't have anything on the drawing board for orbital construction), so you'll want to streamline the back a bit to help it get through atmosphere and up to high Mach in atmosphere.  Again, the SRB/external fuel tank arrangement with maybe a look at the Soyuz FG-style rocket may be the way to go:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/04/Aiaa1.jpg

This one simply because I've never seen it before and because I think it's cool to see that they actually tried it:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/46/Space_Shuttle_Enterprise_in_launch_configuration.jpg

Found this looking these all up: "In the early 1990s, NASA engineers planning a manned mission to Mars, included a Shuttle-C design to launch six non reusable 80 ton segments to create two Mars ships in Earth orbit. The alternative would be to use four Saturn V launch vehicles. However, after President George W. Bush called for the end of the Space Shuttle by 2010, these proposed configurations were put aside."

So your design will definitely work, you'll just want to bring it in a bit maybe ala Soyuz.. sort of a combination of Soyuz and Ares may be the way to go... pull the engines close to the hull, and keep your current configuration..

well my mesh currupted but thats ok, I have to remake it anyway lol the engines I couldnt welded but here is my last render of that model. Engine Length is because its not a rocket engine, its an Ion Drive, very basic so because its experimental I figured it would also be big lol
