Ehhhh just out of pure boredom
« on: September 16, 2009, 01:09:18 pm »
Taking a break from the job hunt, I decided to whip something up to keep my 3d mind from atrophying. Took me about two hours.

Predator and Mammoth Tanks?

Nice...

I knew that comparisons to C&C were inevitable, but I didn't start these with that in mind.

Yeah, that was my brothers reaction, too, but for now I'm okay with it - its not a serious project.

I must say, I like the Helecoptor concept.  The rotarery blades in the two rings is probably a better design then choppers we got today.  May I suggest either the same thing for the aft stabilizer or perhaps using a "Thrust" control to control the crafts rotation/stabilization?  I remember watching a military show once that had a prototype helecoptor equiped with a "Thrust" control, the military was seriously considering using it, but then dropped the idea.  ::)

Oh, the tanks are interesting too.

You mean something like this?

I was thinking of either ditching the idea of a tail assembly (aside from rudder and eleveators) but then I remembered the craft from that arnold movie, and I figured I'd go with some kind of vectored thrust tail.

EDIT

Here's the full line up, thus far.

I want to add a transport chopper, and then I think I'm going to start up on the Warthog-esque vehicles.

Transport exterior is pretty much solid. Details are all going to be made at the same time and added to the various vehicles to further bring them in line with one another - such as handholds, weaponry, landing gear, etc.

I am debating whether or not I want to model out the interiors of these crafts, as well. I've decided that my poly limit is going to be about 8k, and the most complex model so far only has 1k, so I have plenty of room with which to work. I've never tried modeling out a cramped interior before, either, so it will be a learning experience.

Just wanted to say all those models look superb!  But I do have one complaint about one of the Helicoptors.  One of the new ones with the single ring bugs me.  Its actually a really good model, and the design is unique, but I don't think it would work well in real life.

If I remember correctly from some shows I watched in the past, part of the complexity of a chopper is that its blade system is designed to keep the helicoptor from spining round n around.  The aft stabilizer helps in this, but its the design of the chopper blades that minimizes this aswell.  I may be wrong on this, but the single ring design might present a problem here.  Just wanted to let you know.

That is why I was so impressed with the 2 ring design.  I can just tell that the 2 ring design is really simple and straight forward, and you wouldn't have to worry about the chopper rotating around n around.  Heck, it might even help make it a faster helicoptor with the 2 rings.  Much less drag with the chopper blades not so exposed.  Clearly, that 2 ring design is just begging for it to be an attack helicoptor.   ;D

I would stick with the thurst/vector stabilizer.  From what I saw of the military show that discribed it, the system for it was incredibly simple.  Its actually linked to the turbo fans of the blade engine that shoots exhaust to the aft stablizer... hardly any moving parts except to aim the thrust.  Why the military rejected the idea is beyond me...   ::)

The chopper you see with the single ring actually has two blades, one atop each other. It is designed so that one spins one direction while the other spins the other, countering the torque.
Also the tail has the vector jets - they just dont look like jets at the moment.

the only problem i have w/ the helo w/ the blade going through the body is the deflection of the blades.  Granted this can be acounted for, but it would place definate hard constraints on the loads and gs it could take that wouldn't neccesarily be limited by the aerodynamic performance chararistics.

Eh, thats okay - I just wanted something that looks cool. It's hard coming up with new concepts when things have been done 20 times over. I think that the mid-body-rotor chopper is the most original one of the bunch.

In any event, I'm thinking on a few ideas for starships for these guys, too. It's not going to be glaringly original: kind of a hybrid of Halo ships (the frigates, not those hideous destroyers), and Homeworld with some Warhammer Tau and Babylon 5 thrown in a bit here and there. InterMech may be helping me flesh out the ideas, too.

Today, however, I'm still on the vehicles.

I was thinking about building a pair of trans-atmo dropships: a light and a heavy. I will probably also make a destroyer-size vessel capable of going atmo and landing - serving as a ground hq/fortress.

EDIT
Jeeps. Yes I know that it basically is a warthog, but I don't care.

Also the tail has the vector jets - they just dont look like jets at the moment.

It's actually called a coaxial rotor system. The Russian Kamov bureau choppers are infamous for it. They deny the necessity of a tail rotor, because of the second rotor which turns in the opposite direction (hence called a coaxial rotor) kills the gyro effect the first one produces. I would only suggest making the ring fatter and giving space between the two rotors.

EDIT: one other thing, the rotor has to be in (and above) the horizontal center of gravity of the heli, otherwise it'll be too unstable to be able to fly.

Thats a neat gun design you got there.  It definitly reminds me of P-90's, but do the spent casings edject downward like the P-90 or do they eject another way?  The reason why the P-90 is becoming a more popular submachine gun is that it can hold quite a few rounds, small and fairly lightweight, and it can be used by both right or left handed people?

Well, the thing about the tank is simply: how many different directions can you design a tank - at some point one tank is going to look like another.
The same is true of the helicopters. It isn't simply like an Orca from Command and Conquer, but it also resembles a Hornet from Halo, a Helicopter designed by the modeler Howard Day, the chopper from Starcraft 2, and a helicopter from Avatar... And fancy that - they all resemble each other.

Here's what I've got as far as small arms. From top to bottom its a Sub-machine gun, Carbine, Assault Rifle, Light Machine Gun, and Sniper Rifle. I have a few more arms I want to make, primarily a Shotgun, some sort of Beam weapon, and maybe a mini-gun or something. A rocket Launcher might be a good call, too.

I don't know how bad the mapping is going to be yet - but I'm well past 5k triangles. the Command Frigate is actually sitting at a total of 10k triangles (6k polies). Btw, is not 4024 its 4096. 256 > 512 > 1024 > 2048 > 4096 > 8192 (I think my huge battlestar texture was 8192 - i can't remember).

First Impressions: Tanks and Helo's would be great in a futuristic FPS - but something new and not a rehash - too well done to be in "Halo 4: We have no more ideas for new stuff". Throw the hand guns in there, too, and you've an awesome game, no doubt about it. Now all you'd need is a plot. Bravo FoaS, bravo.

Now to the frigates. Very very very first thought when they were just a brief "sketch" oh so few posts ago - something out of Babylon 5, but post Crusade in the time line. Second thought was something more useful - either a Homeworld 2 mod or the start of something for Homeworld 3, or better still, some really awsome new game!

Czar "My hat's off to the modler on these beauties!" Mohab

P.S. Frigates don't like to play solo, you know - looking forward to seeing what else of this mystery fleet you might come up with!

Well, both Halo and Homeworld were my primary inspirations with a bit of B5 sprinkled in, so that's really good :-). I think, though, that as I am developing this universe it's going to get a bit farther from all three - but not by a lot.

Yes, the frigates do not play alone - but first comes the fact that I have to finish this guy - then I'll be working on the other ships, especially since I know exactly how I will do them - mostly.

Anyways: Unwrapping - the buzzkill of all modeling projects.

EDIT: Unwrapping is done - looks like its going to be 5 textures + 1 for the turrets.

Those are really stunning looking ships!

Have you ever thought of modding this game? http://www.kerberos-productions.com/forum/

Sword of the Stars also supports turrets and other toys.

If you surf the forums there - there is a lot of interest in a star trek mod for it.

But no matter what I will be looking forward to adding these into OP!

I haven't had a desire to mod different games - its a whole new learning curve that I am not really interested in learning: it would detract from the actual ship design process.

I think I have the right look down for the armor.

Is that a progenitor color scheme I see?

And any intention to make these ships/vehicles playable in any form? If Angels Fall First could do it...

Yeah - thats how I spotted the error on your chart. I always liked the homeworld color schemes - I tried out the Higaraan, the Progen, and even the Taiidan color schemes - which I liked a lot. The Bentusi one worked with a blue trim instead of the white, too.

Not sure of intent, but the B5-ish-ness is still there - the "A" on the fowrard lower hull, similar to the "A" on Apollo and Agamemnon. It isn't entirely B5 EA schemed, as an "E" would fit the pattern more readily, but you get the idea. "A" on the Edinburgh appears to indicate class rather than name, as the "A-015" on the aft hull would (to me) indicate that this is the 15th A-hull to leave the yards.

the "A" was pretty much what I was thinking, yeah. Either that or they will have different letters based on what "flight" they are - ie: the pack leaders will probably have a different letter, etc. I don't have a concise numbering system, yet - 015 just rolled of the fingers well. I'll come up with a system as I go.

Here she is in prototype orange for testing trials.

As you can see I ditched the Thor's Hammer insignia in favor of a flag. The flag is supposed to be reminiscant of the UN emblem, but integrates the astronomical symbol for our sun instead of just the planet. I want to texture in more detail to the different greeble sections, but not tonight - my head is hitting the keyboard.

I'm happy to see that color chart is getting some use! And thanks for pointing that color error out, btw.

I also like that circular structure at the back. It used to be on the early versions of the Hiigaran carrier and I was sad to see it go (sad to see the antenna also go).

Finally I think any mesh of Homeworld and Babylon 5 will result in greatness, since both mythologies were excellent.

I like it in that Orange color
Though a Red or Green would probably work too.

I like both, and yes, a green works well, too.

Another frigate - this one isn't as flexible as the Edinburgh, but rather has much more in the way of frontal firing arcs.

Awesome designs. I would make them gunned down compared to trek and more fragile. Maybe even just disruptors, drones, and P3s with no shields. Just a bit, but not a lot of armor.

Hell no. These things have shields out the wazoo. Thats what the panels are for. I think, so far, its going to be ADDs for the defensive turrets, P2s for the primary turrets (note that some of them have 2 barrels). Drones, obviously for missiles. Disruptors for another type of cannon (which I haven't made, yet), and probably a Mauler for the front forward-facing cannon (ESG-Lance is too short-ranged).

Missile are fine against slow targets but anything fast or with heavy defensive fire make them useless, unless they have a hugh blast radius. So unless they are more like a photon Torp they would not be useful for a small ship. Mostly because you could not carry enough to over come a defense on a small vessel.

Defesive I would go with more of a gattling gun, ADD, and a ESG. Use the ESG as a energy barrier that converst matter to energy to stop kenitic weapons. I would look at the ISC PPD as a long range weapon and The Hydran Helborers as they are both anti shield weapons. Mauler cannon is good but I think good ol' fusion beams would be better, if you can get close enough.

I've always looked at weapon selection as what tactics do you want the race to employ and against whom. Hydran fusion ships, for example, are designed to fight Klingons. Helbore ships for Lyrans. Who's the enemy of this race and what weapons and tactics will best defeat them.
