CD DVD question
« on: September 08, 2009, 07:23:04 pm »
No matter how long they sat they still should run if they are not too scratch up or cracked right.

But if they are scratched what stuff should I get to clean them with or try to fix them.

next couple of days is going to be spent going thru all of them just to see which ones will still run and which ones don't

I got Xp home on this computer so they still should work I hope.

the oldest ones I have are Age of Empires and Railroad Tycoon

I got good results with a CD that was badly etched with insect repellent by first washing well with cool soapy water, rinsing, then using small amounts of brasso on a microfibre cloth with mostly orbital and radial motion, followed by periodic water rinses for inspection to determine completion. Finally a dry buff with a clean cloth. It worked incredibly well as the etchings were at least 0.3 mm into the carbonate. Scratches should be a snap. I expect a suspension of 200 mesh or finer alumina in water would work as well as brasso. Patience is required. Practice on a junk or blank CD.

Cracks and bubbles you can't do much about that I'm aware of.

Exactly what Bonk said man.

Dude I am so sorry if they where dirty. To be honest, I didn't even think about going out to the Storage trailer to check on them.

If nothing else, a white toothpaste has also helped to clean and repair scratches.

Well, I will keep an eye out for it then. I have got to go through some of my boxes anyways, as I need to find Klingon academy for you-Cheng-Shang (probably spelled that wrong.)

well best buy also sells something I use on my disk;s its a very fine grit radial sander/buffer for disks, it grinds off the cabonate back to a mirrior finish then buffs, downside is disk's are thinner but this was the only way to get some of my older disk's working, well worth the 24.99 paid

That is true, I think Wal-mart has them also Tim. I had forgot about those. Even if it's the hand operated one, it is well worth it, just for the Silica sand thing Candle mentioned.

I got stuff from Gamestop that seemed to work wonders as well.  It's called a Disk fixer or something...and that's exactly what it does.  I think it may be some sort of epoxy or something though.
