I haven't been following Win7 that much.  Are they releasing a 32bit version?  I wish they'd just rip the band aid off and force the change.

It's being released in both flavors. I believe only server-like technologies (ie, SQL Server, Sharepoint, Exchange...etc.) are going to 64bit only versions.

I keep hearing people who say that win 7 is great, they live it, etc, but have yet to find anything specific regarding it's performance or UI. Still though, I listen when people like toasty say it's sweet, so I went to DL the beta to me MacBook pro so I could try it out myself.

I could not get the file to DL on my machine, the browser window just froze. So I tried another browser, same problem. Win 7 may be sweet, but when I can't install it, that counts as a mark against it, IMHO.

Nice machine you got there Clark. Dare I say sweet. It is a real tragedy that it can't run the best desktop OS ever released.

Well, that claim may or may not be true.  I can't say since I can't get M$ to bestow the greatness of the Win 7 beta on my MBP.

I will say, though, that life has been great on this MBP- solid construction, amazing display, and I have yet to experience a single freeze or crash.  It would be nice to try the new beta though.

So let me get this straight... you were trying to download the beta, and it failed on two browser and because you couldn't dled it to actually install it you say 'that because i can't install it (as in the actually install process was the problem when infact you never got passed the dled phase) that its a mark against it your book?  Wow.... just wow... really... thats like me saying that the door i wanted to install sucked because I never bothered to install it even though it was the right dimensions and i had the parts i just never bothered to actually get it to my house.

I didn't say it sucked, and I'm not trying to make some underhanded comment to dis a windows OS I've never used.  But if I can't load the OS to begin with, yeah, it's a mark against the OS.  It's ok, every software has it's good points and bad points, things to like, things to not like, nothing is perfect.

Have you tried Dling it to a PC or a Mac rated to run Windows OS?

Also did you DL the Beta during the time period MS allowed for DL? Also since it comes as an ISO file, did you burn it to DVD before trying to install?

Is you Mac capable of recognizing ISO file format (Disk Images)?

Do you have 3.4 GB HDD space available to save the file?

I you need.. I can Re-DL it from MS and put it on an alternate site.. however I don't know of any site that will allow for a 3.4 GB  ISO disk image..

You have to get a current valid CD key from MS just before you install the DVD.

To me, this is just another mark against owning a Mac.. Incapable of doing anything with any software.. that and extremely limited software selections for OS X.

Are you trying to get it from the official site?

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/download.aspx

Also the DL requires an Active X DL manager to install on your machine to DL the ISO file.. did you allow this to install? It is auto prompted from the DL page.. if you have Active X disabled, then you can't DL the ISO image since you can't install the DL manager for the ISO image.

Yes, my Mac is windows capable.  I've always had this capability with this laptop, I jsut haven't been willing to pay $300 for a copy of an OS that I would at best use as a secondary OS.  In any event, after a couple hours trying to load it on the MBP, I tried my dell laptop.  It's not what I would consider to be Vista capable, but I figured all I needed was to DL the file anyway.

When I tried to DL I'm pretty sure this was before the deadline.  I spent about 3.5 hours screwing with this until I finally threw up my hands and said it wasn't worth it.

I have copied ISO files to my mac before, yes.  Also, at the time I still had 80-90 gigs of free space on my HD. I tried to DL the file from the link that was posted in this forum some time back, which I believe is the same as the one you have here, I beleive, but it's been a while...

I never got to the point where I needed to burn a DVD.

Probably the problem is the active X DL manager.  I never got a prompt for it on my Mac, and whenever I get a prompt on the Dell I say no, since on more than one occassion I've been tricked into downgrading to an older version of active X or loaded a version that seemed to make my dell buggy. Who the hell requires proprietary software for a friggin download anyways?  That's just asinine.  You know, M$ has some good software out there, I use it on a daily basis, but some of the hoops that company makes people jump through are nothing but a PITA.

I suppose you could complain about Mac not being able to run software.  The only times I've run into difficulties, though, with software or hardware is when I've dealt with some PC fanboy who automatically says "you can't do that on a mac," or "it doesn't work with mac."  Case in point, the hard drive I put in my Powermac G4- I was assured by Officemax that it would not work with a mac.  Heh, friggin thing installed without a hitch and works perfectly.  The only people I've had tell me that I "can't do that on a mac" are people who are married to PCs.  Later, after talking to macheads, I end up finding software or hardware very quickly.  I cant tell you how many times I've been in a class, or a meeting and we can't get the PC's to perform some function or work the presentation system, but I simply plug it in to my mac and we're up and running.

But then, I'm sure that some of the people in here are skilled enough with Windows that they could troubleshoot the problem and make it work on Windows pretty quickly too.  Different strokes I guess.

The only thing I hate about running the mac OS are those pockets of smarmy, arrogant steve worshippers.  They really can make just about anyone sick with their attitude.  I learned something though- it's really, really easy to piss them off, and it's some of the best fun I've ever had.

I assume that we are well past the Win7 download time, aren't we?  3.4 GB is doable, I think I have a site at home listed somewhere that you could upload to teh internets, but that's a pretty big upload, would take forever.  Not sure I want to inconvenience you to that level.

I go to download it, it goes to testing and I get to watch a little circle draw for a long time, then get bored after an hour, click close.  Guess I'll be waiting for my next computer to run it. (skipping Vista altogether).
