The world's biggest mobile phone makers announced a deal Monday agreeing to a universal standard phone charger that will work on millions of handsets made by different manufacturers.

Now how about a battery standard for them all?  Then add camera, PDA's and laptop battery and charger standards.

Oh great! I just finally got that embarrassing drywall splotch covered with all my different chargers and proprietary data cables; maybe I can use them as squirrel and rabbit snares when the economy collapses.

I forgot to mention cordles power tools and yard tools to the list needing standard batteries and chargers.

Between my parents they have 2 scooters and an electric wheelchair.  Two use the same batteries but their charger connections are all different.  grrr.

Good chance it would carry over.  Would not be a wise idea to have multi version of a phone (one for Europe, one for the states), that adds a multitude of complexity to inventory control for each phone.

But then, some of these businesses haven't always showed the most smarts all the time.
