Pesty (and others) PC advice once again...
« on: June 28, 2009, 06:01:56 am »
I don't think I'll be able to pull off the I7 by october, so I played around a bit and came up with this, Posted also over at Dual boxing.com.

Would like to know what you think guys...

If anyone has advice, I would greatly appreciate it, as I have done some research, But I'm not sure if this will pull it off or not.

MB is a MSI DKA790GX

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…N82E16813130191

Around $120.00

CPU is a AMD Athlon X2 7850 2.8 ghz.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…N82E16819103678

$70.00

Memory is Mushkin 240 pin DDR2 1066 (8 gig total)

Video will be MSI R4670 -2 1 gig ram DDR3 Crossfire... 2 @ $80.00

Good deal on a case and PS here...

XCLIO GREATPOWER X14S4P4 700W ATX12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Retail

XCLIO A380BK Fully Black SECC 1.0mm thickness ATX Full Tower Computer Case - Retail

OF course I have some DVD burners laying around, along with some SATA drives.

I figure the whole thing will run around $662.00 Plus shipping etc.

The plan is to buy a little bit here and there , until October, and to throw Win 7 in there. (I have a very tight budget due to it being summer time and I am a cattle rancher. I'll never be rich, but I'll never go hungry.)

What would something like this Craigslist listing go for?

- AMD Athlon 64X2 4400+ Toledo 2.2GHZ socket 939 dual core processor
- Abit AT8 32X Socket 939 Motherboard
- 2 gig PC3200 RAM
- 2x ATI HD2600XT graphics cards with 512mb video ram (with crossfire connectors).
- CoolerMaster Soprano case with two upgraded high-CFM case fans (front case intake fan, rear case exhaust fan)
- additional blow-hole fan.
- Memorex DVD burner

Unit needs hard drive and power supply (were recycled into new unit, but can include a 160GB SATA drive if needed).  Also can include a 750w Thermaltake Power supply, but I am not positive it is operating at 100% output.

The only thing I would be thinking about Stephen is if you bought a AMD system now and wanted to get a i7 later you would have to get a another motherboard and processor.  If you bought a Intel motherboard and a cheaper processor you could upgrade the processor later on.

The other option is to wait and let the price come down.  Since you are planning on buying in three months you can afford to keep your options open.  Things may change by then and you can pick up a i7 processor that does the job better than the AMD you are looking at.

I plan on buying the stuff that won't change that fast first like the case, power supply, BR-DVD, hard drive, etc.  Then buy the processor, ram, and motherboard last so I get the latest system that I can afford.  I find it's easier on the pocketbook when I buy them in steps.  Hope this helps.

If you can hold off on the video card til after win7 is released and get a DX11 capable card I'd recommend doing so. I wouldn't crossfire/SLI two bargain cards. I'd get one good card. At this point in time, I'd buy either a NVidea 260-216 or HD4870, depending on brand preference, for about the same money as the  2X 4670s. Not all games scale well on dual GPUs. Again, though, I'd wait til DX11 cards were available.

Agreed.. NVidia is schedualed to release the GTX 300 series around the same time as the release of Windows 7 which is supose to be DirectX 11 compliant

AMD has a DirectX 11 card on the market, but reports indicate that the Physx isn't working correctly for AMD cards (as such the computer's CPU has to process the Physx for the AMD vid cards).

Also, the CPU can't pull the Physx back if previously using an NVidia card when switching to an AMD card, NVidia overwrites the DLLs that allows the CPU to process Physx so that the Vid Card Physx processor can take over the Physx load.. AMD still needs to write their own DLLs to force Windows or even NVidia to use the Physx that the AMD cards are starting to put in. Now if your are a pure AMD fan and have run nothing but AMD vid cards.. you have a 50 / 50 shot of Physx being run fron the Radeon vid cards (HD 3850 series and higher with HAVOC support. HAVOC is ATI's version of NVidia's PHYSX).

so currently, as for gaming, the best cards are NVidia.. especially with Physx.. and about the time Windows 7 is released, NVidia will have the GTX 300 series on the market, which will be DirectX 11 cards.

AMD already has the ATI Radeon R8x0 as a DirectX 11 card, but again the drivers can't support on card HAVOC physx processing currently (meaning 100% of the time).

So currently for the best vid card with DirectX 11 support, NVidia cards will be the tops when the GTX 300 series hits the market, however limited Radeon R8x0 cards already have DirectX 11 support, but lacks on the Havoc Physx side.

Hope that this helps.
