Smart People needed for Stupid Question
« on: June 30, 2009, 03:54:37 pm »
K it's actually not a computer question.. but

If you stand on one place on earth, is there a term for all the sky/space you can see from that single vantage point ?

Or, if you had a sphere, someone standing at one point with a laser that could be seen to an infinite distance would be able to shine it in a cone(ish) shaped area above them, what's this called?

Trying to help a friend writing a story, wants some kinda ground based weapon to be able to destroy anything it can see from ia fixed point on a planet, was wondering if there's a more intelligent/astronomical/scientific term to use than "line of sight from a fixed point on the planet"

Thanks as always if anyone has any idea what I'm talking about.

How about:

Hemispherical defense laser
Vertical Cone Laser
Shock Cone Laser
Pyrometric Cone Laser
Infinity Cone Laser
Boresight Defense Laser
LOS Laser (Line of Sight)

Give it solid photons with mass and call it the LOS Ballistic Laser.  Mount it on a Geodesic Defense Platform.

I also like the terms LoS Atomizer and Pressure Swirl Atomizer.

A weapon firing down a tunnel would be a cylincrical cone laser as opposed to an expanding cone laser.

etc.

Everything you can see would be the panaroma, which has few synonyms.  LoS or Line of Sight is your best bet here.

A synonym for a cone is a conduit.  A conduit laser has a ring to it, but it's not very descriptive to the average reader..

Woops.... sorry.. you asked for smart people.. my bad..

Thanks! Could have sworn I'd heard a mathish term before, oh well.

And really, "smart" just means "smarter than me".
(So I'll just assume you work with quantum mechanics and string theories)
