WTF is up with BattleClinic?????
« on: June 17, 2009, 07:51:50 am »
I went to the site today and tried to dowload some of the newly posted models and some of the older ones.

Used everything I knew of typing in the specific parameters and kept coming up with zilch and when i tried to download the newly posted models i kept getting a message saying the the file could not be found or that i did not have permission to download.

So WTF is up with the boneheads over there?  now you have to have an account and dowloads are doled out according to your "donation" ratio?

Free sites are just that FREE.

So could someone please give me some info on why they chaged so drastically and where I can download the models without having to be extorted?

If Battle clinic is now a "pay for download" site....

*shakes head*

How the mighty have fallen.

Don't matter, we'll never cost any money, and my offer still stands.

I'll host anything for download that has to do with SFC.

I was able to download by clicking on the (alt) link. I get a screwed up file name on each on though, was never asked to pay.

Apparently they are having a two week test of their new web site design.  I didn't see anything about them turning into a paysite.  If that does happen, I'll have to remove my one little kitbash from their download library.

Let me put a stop to this rumor immediately.

I'm the founder, so you're getting this straight from the horse's patooty.

BattleClinic is not, and as long as I own it will never be, pay-to-use.

OP, you are incorrect and I ask you to edit your post.

The WTF comment might still stand, 'cause the site redesign seems incomplete. Took me a minute to find the Community Docks under "Tools," and the convenient "search" option for the docks is gone. (Using the global "search" box on the page doesn't find items in the Docks.)

Be interesting to see the wiki get filled in

I had to re-read Frey's post. It says "IF battleclinic is a pay-for-download site"

I am guessing that is the "test" part. I can't get proper file names when I download things nor get anything besides the (alt) to actualy make a file download from the docks.

The search function has me baffled too.

When I wanted to search for anything I had uploaded before I used to just type my user name in the search window and it would bring up everything that was uploaded in my name. I get nothing now. I tried to search by file name, fcb for example, and I still get nothing.

Give 'em a break guys. I think they did a pretty slick job of the switchover in their site restructuring. I knew it was coming and adjusted our frontpage docks block the day after (Must talk to MrCue about that - still needs a tweak or two). I suppose I am somewhat negligent in not keeping the community here up to date as I observed the changes. My apologies.

I think there is a feedback thread on Battleclinic about the changes, try posting your input there in a polite and helpful tone. Battleclinic has done us a great service over the years and I hope it will continue for many years to come.

Baffled? I would assume that function is either broken at the moment or has not been activated yet.

Were in the process of hooking up the search box on various pages.

The search box on any docks page, should now let you search the docks as intended.

Bonk, let me know what interface is best for you.
BCs new API is using soap, so we can either use that, or some XML feed for you to fetch, cache and parse.

Thanks guys, sorry for coming in at "red alert" -- I get really defensive about pay-to-use is all.

We still heart you all, even Frey  :coolsmiley:

Search works now, sweet :)

Just a suggestion though, any way to give us an advanced search feature so we can narrow stuff down by author (and any other fields you can think of)?

yea I got the main download link to work now, but the alt download gives a long file name of seemingly random letters, which you may want to look into.

Thats intended behaviour.
The alt method is only for those who are truly having problems using the main download link.

Are the mods going to continue to be listed in order of upload and will the page system get above 200 like it needs to for the Feds?

every time I use the search all I get are forum results/threads. I know there has got to be a missouri class on battleclinic...it's an old tmp battleship..But I can't even figure out how to get into the ship catagories. All I get are recent additions. Where's the race menu?

well I click community docks, I see the recent uploads, and I use the search at the top of the page.

I also tried the search from the page you linked me to, still forum results..no ships.  Some of the screenshots on ships are too large for my screen, and I can't seem to scroll the image, it scrolls the background (the info page) instead

BCs new API is using soap, so we can either use that, or some XML feed for you to fetch, cache and parse.

Whatever is convenient for you, just PM me the url/request and I'll work it out. A simple xml feed might be best though, unless you want to play with the new SOAP API and we can jazz it up a bit.

I am having the same problems as starforce when it comes to searching battleclinic.

The search box searches on title & author.
At this time, there are no plans to develop the search beyond what it does now.

I understand that there are no plans to expand search functions, but I think that there is a small albeit growing sense of frustration with the search functions. I for one would love to see a an optional breakdown of authors (modeller, texturer, etc) We have a lot of group projects going on - plus there are people who take advantage of the ambiguity and upload a model which they did nothing on, but they are the author.

A break down of classes might be a neat thing too: light cruiser, frigate, destroyer. The problem with that is that people have different definitions on what is what - so I don't know if its plausible. I know that in the past when I searched for "Enterprise" it wouldn't find things that are labelled "U.S.S. Enterprise" (that may be a bad example, but there are certainly gaps in what the search engine was capable of).

A breakdown of eras: TOS, TMP, TNG, Post-TNG, Abrams-TOS, Other might also be a good idea.

Well all that would be nice and if you HAD those fields to begin with so they could be filled out as the model was uploaded that would have been great.

As it stands now someone would have to go through all the models and add that information, but if someone did go through them all at least all the duplicates could be removed
