Here's an Idea that I had:
A Colonial engineer had a concept to develope the next generation of warship called a
Protostar. The
Protostar was to be a mobile battle and staging platform. More capable than the battlestars, with their proposed cabability to handle more auxillary craft and fighters, as well as act as short term starbase. The main problem that arose was its means of propulsion... The
Protostar was just too complex for "standardized" and "normal" propulsion reactors and assemblies to accomodate. Several different approaches to the engine design difficulties were tested in simulations, but all were deemed subpar to the established battlestars. The project was shelved...
Years later when war with the Cylons first broke out, in the first strong push into Colonial Central Space, the Colonial navy was face to face with a ship that echoed passed impossibilities... the
Protostar.
The vessel launched wave after wave of Cylon attackers overwhelming their former masters, taking their first major victory in the Human Cylon War.
