Well If I ever click on buy now
« on: June 06, 2009, 05:50:18 pm »
Dought if you would see me here very often I'm so tempted As games like these are my first love and passion. Got started on games like these when Avalon hill came out with a bunch of them in the late 60,s to mid 80's. I loved pushing cardboard counters around on a cardboard battlefield. And now that I found this site and see a lot of them computerised, I'm again so very tempted to get them again.

That's how I got started.  Tactics II, Afrika Korps, Blitzkrieg, Caesar at Alesia, Flat Top...

But most of all was SFB.

Thank you Khalee1.  I have been looking for a Vista compatible version of CloseCombat.  You have given me a link.  Will report back on any problems I may have with the game.

Like Sarek, I played Tactics (squares...what where we thinking?) and a bunch of Avalon Hill games (personally, I loved Squad Leader) and S&T games.

Thanks for the connection.

MatrixGames is my favorite game company.

I"m currently in a War in the Pacific Campaign.  January 1943... as the US, about ready to start my strategic bombing campaign against Japan  (yes, the AI is what all AI's are) from the Aleuts.  The "battle of Midway" turned out differently, I lost 5 US CV's, had one seriously damaged, and 2 Brit CV's were partially damaged.  In return I sunk the Akagi, Shokaku, and moderately damaged the other 5 CV's the Japs had.  So basically, until their CV's are repaired and mine Essex class start appearing, the Pacific War has been reduced to a "no-CV" ocean.  My main strategy is that instead of Island Hopping from the South and Australia, I deicded upon the "Central and Northern" strategy, where I move across the CentPac to close off Japan, move across the Aleuts into Northern Japan.  In China, I'm moving my 300k Chinese army into HongKong wich allows me to close off Formosa and the "western route" from the DEI to Japan.  I"m using the Brits to march on Singapore from Burma, so that I can REALLY supply China from India, once I get that base taken and the sea lane to China open and secure.

I played all of the original Close Combats.  They were the games that got me into computergaming.

I haven't played any of matrix's "updates" to the series, though.

I do have "Highway to the Reich" - awesome game if you're into "real time" company level action.

Most of Matrix's games are grog games though.  They are for the wargamer, not a gamer.

I grew up on Avalon Hill.  FlatTop (my favorite), Squad Leader, the Fleet Series, Guns of August, etc. etc.

I will say that I have never been disappointed with a MatrixGames product.  They support their games for a long time.  The forums are filled with great info.

And I have found the same to be true Ace.  Game downloaded and plays fine and will be getting a disc soon as a back-up.

Again, thanks Kahlee.

Which one did you pick up?

I hesitate to pick any of the three up at 50$ apiece for what is basically a 10 year old game with updates... but it's tough hesitating, because those Close Combat games were the best!  Soooo much fun.

The biggest fun I'd have was trying to keep my guys alive throughout an entire campaign. CC3 I'd get a sniper with 150+ kills... it's depressing when they die from some random mortar shot, but that's the way it goes.

Heya, lemme tell you,  if you're an grog-wargamer, you've found nirvana.... and if you loved pushing cardboard counters around a cardboard map in the late 70's... you prolly fall into the "grog" category.

Me don't like the so called "wargames" that are simply the latest RTS engine with some Tiger and Sherman tank skins.  Me don't like the "wargames" that are FPS shooters with a WW2 skin.

Me likey like the grog wargames, where I can track EACH pilot's skill, kills, missions, fatigue, for the ENTIRE PACIFIC THEATER.  In fact, in my current War in the Pacific, my best pilot is a Chinese guy (cuz that's where most of the air battles have been taking place on a consistent basis)... but... get this... for 8 months of the war, I had a P39 squadron rack up about 15 kills total.  I upgraded them recently to P38's, based them at Port Moresby, started using them as CAP over a couple of basis that would see regular Miss Betty bombardments runs, and within a week they shot up to about 150kills before I had to rotate them back to Australia for R&R.  I was impressed by the game... the P39's didn't have the speed to catch up to the bettys, so they didn't really kill too many.  The P38's did, and I now have Air Superiority over PNG.

John Tillers Campaign Series?

This is a very "unique" thing to me... but... I recall purchasing TalonSoft's "Rising Sun" from Best Buy, what's unique about it is that I bought two games that day.  The second game was SFC1. :)

Let me know what game ya pick up, I might pick it up too and we can see if we can get some PvP action going or something!

I loved the Battleground series John Tiller did for TalonSoft which apparently have been repackaged by Matix in the Civil War and Napoleonic war games.  HPS Simulations has a bunch of his games although I found them buggy with units disappearing and appearing when playing multiplayer by TCP/IP.  When I contacted their support they said no one else had complained about it though.

Sorry for the late response.  CC5 (D-Day).  Game works great.  CDs showed up in two days.  Only negative is there is no printed manual but there is an e-version that comes with the game (both the D/L and CD copies) that you can print...admittedly it will burn a print cartridge for the 100 page manual.

I've played quit a bit of Campaign Gettysburg multiplayer, it's a great game with some huge maps.

Heya Khalee, I've3 been thinking about one of the two Grand Strategy CW games... War Between the States or Forge of Freedom.

Let me know what you think, and if it's possible to play one or the other via PBEM... game on :)  I'll even be the south, and roll an AAR on these forums for fun.
