Star Trek Rating my 2c
« on: May 31, 2009, 07:35:54 am »
After watching the new Star Trek Movie... 5 times... here is the ratings:

On a scale of 1 - 10 and 10 being the best.

Story line:   8

The characters:  9

The score:  5

The CGI effects:  9

The villain: 7

Overall final rating: 7.6

The show actually was a very good twist of the TOS.  The idea of a time line shift was great!

First the love angle of Uhura and Spook was done nicely. As in the very first show of Star Trek Uhura openly flirts with Spook and this part of the movie was good.  A good spin off...

Kirk was done very well and the fact that his friendship with Spook is established here is very well done.

McCoy was on the mark, Sulu, and Checkov...

Over all this version of J.J.'s was on the mark and awesome.  I saw the original show when it first aired and have been follow TOS and the rest of the "versions" of Star Trek since.

The timeline altering was great and gives my kids and their kids a new crew following the same idea in a different time line.

As an 11 year old said: I can relate to these guys...
He never said it about the old show and he watched all the episodes.

Just my 2c

The one I remember with the crush on "Spook"  was nurse Chapel, not Uhura. I remember Uhura (and others) teasing "Spook" from time to time about certain human traits he displayed, but I remember no flirting. Please site a specific example. What do you consider the first episode? Pilot, first aired or first taped?

I really wish they had Chapel in the new movie in a role like you suggested.

The Spock in those first episodes was interesting, that's for sure -- he was actually yelling orders in "Where No Man" and I think it was "The Cage" where he was touching a funny plastic blue plant and smiling.

Well you have to give Nimoy a pass there. He was still working out just what his charater was supposed to be.

Umm, McCoy does call out Chapel's name in the triage scene though we never do see her. Methinks she is being saved for the second movie.

ah, the setup for a love triangle no doubt.

Yeah, Nimoy did a lot of evolving in those early episodes, and I always felt that Uhura was interested in Spock and was a tease.  She didn't come out and say "do me!" like Chapel did, but was always there with a little look in her eye.  More subtle, but present (knowing the limits but enjoying the challenge), as I recall.

In one of the first episodes, Spock is in charge and Uhura is telling him how romantic it would be on the planet below.  He's having none of it.  He's not rejecting her, he simply has no concept of what she is saying.

Eventually Uhura, in desperation, asks Spock if he never took a girl out into the moonlight back on Vulcan.  This led to the famous conclusion:

SPOCK:  Lt., Vulcan has no moon.
UHURA:  [disgusted]  I'm not surprised, Mr. Spock.

That's the closest to flirting or even interest that I recall.

Well, wasn't there a scene where she was singing where there was a little flirtation as well.  Yes, I do believe it turned into a bit of a joke on spock or something, but I kind of always thought it was Uhura's way of trying to get under his skin.  Once you're there, that's half the battle, right?  I'd have to go back and watch to make sure, though.

Thats my recollection EE, just teasing him to try and get a response. It was a bit of a sport for the crew to bait him or get him in an embarrassing situation once in a while.

The most I ever saw Uhura respond to male advances or express her feelings towards someone in any way was in "The Man Trap" when the salt vampire took the form of an African man that sweet talked her in Swahili and in "Plato's Stepchildren" when she told Kirk that when there was a dangerous situation, his strong command presence on the bridge made her feel safe.

The scene Scippy is referring to was, IMO, just a character building opportunity for the writers to illuminate some of the differences between humans and vulcans to the audience, who were new to the concept too.

Don't forget a cut scene from "Elaan of Troyus" where Uhura asks to learn how to play the Vulcan Lyre.

Actually, in TOS, the implied attraction was between Uhura and Sulu.  In the Naked time, when he was stripped of inhibitions, Sulu grabbed Uhura.  In Mirror Mirror, Uhura seduced Sulu's counterpart.
