Damn, I can't watch DVD's on my computer anymore.

I was hoping you guys could help me. MY computer crashed and I had to reinstall everything. It's taken a while, but I have most everything back up. I can still watch HD movies on itunes and TV, but I can't watch DVD's anymore. The computer gives me an errors and suggests I decrease the video resolution. I don't want to watch DVD's in crappy resolution. Is there some software I need to watch DVD's on my computer with decent resolution?

Did you loose a video Codec maybe?

I know I use VLC player or SMPlayer all the time. They auto update, and allow me to watch just about any kind of movie regardless of region.

Thanks Stephan. I will look for those programs.

I did lose a codex and found one on line that let me watch TV, but it does not like DVD's for some reason.

LOL, IT varies man. For newer DVD's etc. I find VLC player works best, But, SMPLayer is just so much faster, and easier to use on most things.

I prefer using KLite Codec Pack on Windows Media Player for XP.. The only other player I have on board is Quicktime just to watch trailers..

on Vista and Windows 7 I use Vista (or Windows 7) Codec pack with 64 bit tools.. everything plays in Medial Player, including HD movies and HD .klv files

anyhow.. VLC is a good player as well, but the redundancy of media players burns me up.. Media player to me has better tools plus I can configure each codec separately.

Pestilence, does Klite improve the Windows media player clarity? It seems like the shows I record are fuzzier now.

It should improve clarity.. with the newer versions of DivX and XVid and FFDirect Show, Makovisha, etc codecs that it installs, clarity is really good..

I was wondering earlier why my DVD didn't work.  Then I realized it was in the CD burner not the DVD burner.   :banghead:

Don't know if any of you guys have come across Media Player Classic - Home Cinema or not, but it is a pretty good video player. I use it to watch cable on the PC while working on something else, as it uses WAAAAAYYYYY less cpu than any other video/DVD player. The analog tuner functionality needs some work though. Check out the rendering acceleration options under output, I have not seen such in any other media player.

NP.. Like I stted.. KLite updates once a month with the latest codec versions..

In Windows Vista or Windows 7, you want to use either the Vista Codec package or Windows 7 Codec Pack from Shark007 website.

on 64 bit systems, make sure to get the 64 bit tools.

For optimal performance.. I usually disable the FFDirectShow Video and Audio (set in the FFDirectShow config panel to not start / use with Media Player)

This way most videos will use DivX or XVid codec for playback.. usually DivX.

In Windows 7 with Media Player 12, DivX is built in to Media Player.. I am still looking for a way to update the DivX codec as the DivX codec can cause some system problems.. Shark007 does not alter Media Player native environment, as such will not update DivX unless DivX is not present.

I think the new DivX installer from the DivX company works with Windows 7, but I have yet to test it myself.. Think I will do that now.

Edit : checked for updating Windows 7 DivX content.. Windows 7 already comes with the latest DivX codec (DivX 7).
