New Star Trek pulls in 76.5 Million!

NEW STAR TREK LOOKING TO GO BOLDLY !!!

The new film, opening this weekend, broke all expectations and carrying a whopping 76.5 Million opening weekend.

Apparently, contrary to some's belief around here, Star Trek did NOT die, and seems to be doing very well indeed.

Almost everyone I've talked to, long term Trekker and newbie Trekkie alike, said the film was AWESOME.

Discuss here, and be nice, I will sure phaser the first person that comes in here being crappy.

I am a sucker for red heads......and apparently green skin too.

I've seen it twice once by myself on Friday, and once with the kids. They basically roll their eyes at anything trek but they both enjoyed the movie.

I thought that J.J. Abrams devoutly followed all of my suggestions regarding how all weapons are sub-light, and that going to warp is really, really, really fast so that you cannot shoot at each other while at warp, and they used AMDs to shoot down missiles and there were a lot of booms and bangs and shizbangs and the other fun Star Wars stuff.  They even had Capt. Pike do an Han Solo and say "Punch It!!" when going to warp.  All in all, the movie was great.

But, how come Kirk loses the girl to a Vulcan?

They should had had DH take his spot. ;D

Bah, the amount of money earned during the first weekend is irrelevant to how good a movie is. I'm sure everyone remembers how much money Star Wars: Episode One made when it was released. I'm also sure you remember how many Oscars it won and how it was loved by all the fans... oh wait  ::). Besides they always use money earned instead of the number tickets sold and never adjust for inflation. Therefore what your looking at is totally skewed, especially since theaters have different prices (I saw it in a IMAX theater which meant I spent $4 more than if I had gone to a regular theater).

So.. still haven't seeeeeen it yet (my 40th birthday is in 12 days) and a bunch of my old friends and I are going to see it at the IMAX.

They very blatently say that it is an alternate timeline in the film, so as long as you go in with that knowledge and the normal Trek "anything can happen", you willl find the movie enjoyable.

George Kirk is my new Trek hero. Made the wife cry a little, but he remembered what is most important. Hell of a career ender, though.

K. Maru scene - It cleared up the TWoK "he cheated" line, and the apple was brilliant.

Old Spock - I look at it this way - DeForest Kelly was there at Encounter at Farpoint, Patrick Stewart was there for Emissary, Armin Shimerman was there for Caretaker... symbolically giving the new guys the keys to the Trek series. Far as I'm coincerned, Nimoy gave these kids the keys to the next series. And, without a doubt, played the role well.

I fully enjoyed the various tie-ins to Enterprise and TOS.

My only one true "I can't get over it" gripe - we have to wait to see what happens next.

I think the alternate timeline is a convenience for those who want to be die-hard about it, thats all.

This was the only thing that saved the movie for me.. them repeating that this was an alternate time line.

I still have problems with the design of the ship, however, given an alternate time line, I think I can live with this movie, however the new ship can never replace the true NCC-1701 U.S.S. Enterprise, the redesign was a bit too much and made the ship not all that attractive to me.

Overall, I give the movie 7 out of 10..  Ship design was a big - to me and reuse of content repetatively from TOS and TMP Movies which killed some of the originality.

To me it looked like they took TOS and TMP movies and crammed them all into 1.. I saw a lot of TOS, ST 1 and ST 2 in the movie (especially with the bug they put into Pike (Wrath of Khan), the early introduction of Checkov from TOS Season 2, the hidden attraction of Spock and Uhura from TOS season 2 - 3, the shot into the torpedo bay on George Kirk's ship (Wrath of Khan), the destruction of Romulus (Praxis from ST V), etc..)

I didn't buy a ticket.. a Friend bought a ticket for me and begged me to go (and took some alcohol to convince me to watch the movie).. I might go watch it again on my own to catch what I missed in the first run..

After all, it is an alternate time line.. thus might be an interesting reboot.

The movie was a bit too fast paced for my liking, but overall it was done pretty well. like I stated 7 out of 10 (couldn't get use to the sound of the ship doors.. where's the whoosh-boop? sounded more like chimes..)
"You still don't get it, do you?......That's what he does. That's all he does! You can't stop him! It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead!"

I actually think the movie was paced perfectly - I never once looked at my watch. It started off with a good hook, then lightened way up for a perfect amount of time. It got a bit heavier (but not too much), but still kept light elements througout.

looking at the starbase in the pic got me thinking.  It is more in line with SFB starbases then with the starbases that we have seen in the movies before.  Maybe a push for more SFB stuff might work.

The starbase looks like it came out of the Starfleet Techincal Manual by Jefferies.  If it is the same starbase, then the circular extensions are supposed to be where Starships under going repairs or construction are.  Those extensions don't look big enough to house starships though.  Of course, this movie set the Enterprise being built on the planet's surface...which is only viable if they were afraid that orbital shipyards were vulnerable to attack.

I like that the starbase was inspired by Joseph's design - if it had been exactly like it it would've bothered me.

Heres a couple of links with pic. Its not from the move per say but with the exception of the type of hull paint which seems to have slightly different reflective qualities  here I can't tell the difference.

its worth the extra few bucks to see it in IMAX...

better sound

bigger screen

additional scenes

i thoroughly enjoyed it!  and will see it again...

except for losing 40 some odd ships to a romulan punk...

I agree, that was about the only problem I had with the ship, was the "Shark Fins" If they had just stuck with those normal Tubes on the end, It would have been fine IMHO

i've seen a couple still frames that actually made me not cringe.. but go "OMG look.. the engineering section looks perfect... omg .. they've got the bridge dome glowing."

So.. still haven't seeeeeen it yet (my 40th birthday is in 12 days) and a bunch of my old friends and I are going to see it at the IMAX.

Any opinions on the IMAX vs normal theatres?

Regards,

Frey,

Definitely worth the extra few bucks. I saw it on Friday in IMAX and it was great..... I can't wait for the next one....
Maybe this will spark something along the lines of a new TV show .....

...and I agree with your comment about SFC4......

Saw the new Trek  in Imax..... Incredible !!!    J.J. did a hell of a job, contrary to all the pre movie hype...  as for the cast...

Chris Pine- great job considering he's trying to fill a legends shoes...
Zachary Quinto- priceless
Zoe Salanda- being that hot, would have been an admiral at starfleet communications command in 2 years
John Cho- not even close to Sulu
Anton Yelchin- perfect Chekov, except for the hair
Simon Pegg- could'na done aaany better, lads
Karl Urban- onlly thing missing was the country doc drawl

As for Vulcan.... coulda been done different, Orion girls at starfleet academy ???
so aside from the small nitpicks, this movie makes Trek alive and well and shows that the fat lady has'nt sung yet for the oldest space opera ever   8)

Well, Orion is a part of the Federation.  The pirates are not officially part of Orion.

One thing that has always bothered me about the russian accent used.  Povel Andreievich Chekov has "v's" in his name and he can say them, but any other V's end up being said as a "w".  He doesn't say Powel for his first name.

I' too loved it my only reall nitpics where the interior sets which didn't feel trek to me much less TOS and the tweeked sound effects. We have been using the original stuff for 40 years and they still work fine. Oh and those phaser pistols. Sorry JJ they just looked like toys and not the real thing. :P Like I said nit picks I would definetly recomend the film and egerly look forward to another instalment. ;)

Aww the pistols were kewl.  They flip the barrel for stun or kill, I mean how kewl is that.

Okay, I didn't really like them, but the flipping barrels was kind of funny.

Finally got to see it today.

Absolutely !! Fantastic!!! The movie started at a fast pace and never slowed down.

Excellent job for a remake. Spock and McCoy where right on the money. As a matter of fact the younger Spock looked so original it was spooky.

I can't wait for the next one.

JJ earned the keys to the franchise with this movie. He had a near impossible job, and pulled it off, with some of the most picky, and critical fans around.

The funny thing is that in the way alot of stuff worked with the ships, weapons, and systems it looked like SFB and SFC had a much bigger effect on the speciel effects crews then the original show did.

I felt the same way. They even had AMD's.

In my most authentic Comic Book Guy Voice... Ahem...

"WORST EPISODE EVAR!"

 ;D

Now - before you lynch me - I definately recommend this film for what it is - saw it in IMAX and the first 10 minutes were Wrath of Kahn style Awesomeness to me!

However, seriously, the plot was easily, and I Mean EASILY, the WORST of all the Star Trek Movies!

(and that is sayin' somethin!)

I mean - since when did Kirk turn into the Scarlet Witch, and the Enterprise turn into the S.S. Heart of Gold?? - if you get my meaning...

Also - seriously -

** WATCH OUT SPOILER BELOW **

TIME TRAVEL AGAIN!??!!!!!!!!!!!!

 >:(

Didn't that already RUIN the Enterprise TV Series already!??

And this plot is practically a combo of the Last Star Trek plot and the Enterprise series plot - I mean really?? REALLY??? THAT"S ALL YOU GOT!??????

And since when did ROMULANS act/look like friggin' KLINGONS!???  - Abbsurd!!!!!!

And Destroying THAT planet - REALLY!?? - Talk about ALTERNATIVE TIMELINE!!??!!!!

And since when was Spock's dad so incredibly understanding???????? - He sould win Dad of the Frikkin Century!

 :D

**** End of Spoilerz *****

The characterizations - though - almost make up for it - they really do - I mean I WILL watch this again - McCoy is friggin' spot on - and HILARIOUS - imho!

So - I give this a definit thumbs up - as long as you leave your brain at the door - and - as long as your brain is off - shell out the extra dough for the IMAX - I mean Everything is Better when Bigger!!!

;-)

For anyone turned off on the plot issues with Star Trek - be warned - Terminator's plot holes makes this convienent interpretation of cannon seem TAME by comparrison!

(can't give that one a recommend - but, I dunno - I guess there was a moment or two that felt fun - as long as you aren't really into the mythos - or the idea that AI can perhaps strategize better than say Dr. Evil...)

Well yes - I suppose I did - in the way that a Fan Boy can enjoy a "What If?" comic...

(One of my favorites being What IF the Incredible Hulk battled Thor, God of Thunder! - man that had a BRUTAL ending - heh heh!)

Kind of reminds me when famous guest writers would do X- Files episode - I'd go - that was cool/different - but I look forward to getting back to the real show...

I mean - it's a fun film - but it is NOT Star Trek - not Cannon - not Realistic - not Challenging - missing everything that Sci Fi is usually known for...

Now Primer - just saw that the other day - that was a wild movie!

I guess if

SFC Series = Wrath of Khan

then

Star Trek DAC = Star Trek Reboot

to put it into SFC fanboy perspective...

But Terminator - man - that equals Halo 2!

 :P

And now... something entirely different.
