Uranus-Class...
« on: April 05, 2009, 07:59:41 am »
Been a while, so I thought I'd give a Planet (and a God for that matter) that not too many people give much thought to, a little respect.
This is an Early(not Pre) TOS Federation starship that would have debuted about 15 years prior to the construction of the Constitution-Class.  By the time of the TOS, these ships would have been a much rarer sight within the fleet, relagated to patrol duties in the younger Independent races that were either applying for entry or just newly entered.  So basically, its like seeing our older aircraft in other countries here.
Anyway, here she is: Uranus-Class

As Always, Special thanks to the Deadman for the renders to post.

Interesting....
I always thought that the dome on the top of the saucer was a sensor though. If it is then the pylons you did would block those. You might want to consider moving the pylond to arch from the middle and move the sensor forward. If you look at it from a engineering stand point, then this would never be done. Stress fracture and any damage from combat would have a chance of making the engines crash into the saucer killing the crew. They would add a support bar in the back of the suacer to prevent it.

On second thought the support bar would be used on a TOS version, the sensor could be moved to the top of the arch and off what would normally be the bridge area.
People always said they wanted the government to listen to them and now the government is listening, taking notes and names...and coming to see you soon!

America-Not the land of the free anymore...
Its the land of the freeloaders

Remember the axiom of big government bureaucrats: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. When, finally, under the crushing weight of taxes and regulation, it stops moving, subsidize it.

I like everything atolm does, especially when it pushes limits. This one is an instant classic. Reminds me of those Iotian ships :-)

Hey atolm,

can you post a pick of the bottom hull's backside? I'm interested in seeing how you did that shuttlebay.

How about you get on AIM and I'll pass it to you so I don't have to bother WZ for a render :D

Awesome, another out of the box design! I do agree with GotAFarmYet, it might be interesting to put the sensor dome, or bridge for that matter off-center, with one of your inverted keyhole doublers. Just a thought. Anyway, great ship!

Sorry MarkyD, I have no sketches for this one, i just modelled her...
Intermech, that might be an option, but those are aux sensor domes(they are only used as a lateral array)... when the ship blows off the hulls in a seperation, they become fully fledged.

Good design Atolm, but when I seen the thread title I was partly hoping that this would be a giant butt with nacelles

As always, an interesting design. What would the firing arcs be for a ship like this? Seems to me that aft firing and broadside weapons would be best....

Thanks.  I'm working on the upper hull at the moment and making slow progress, but there is progress nonetheless.

I'm not sure what the intended firing arcs were when Atolm designed her, but I'm considering rotating the usual saucer phaser firing points by 45 degrees.  I'm not so sure there is a particularly good spot for a torp launcher so I might leave them out of this one.

On the front of the saucer to either side of the struts. or on the front of the saucers themselves?

I think torp launchers and beam weaps on the front of the pylons would work well. They could be stacked vertically. A bank of LS and RS beam weapons are reasonable too. Is the impulse drive on the rear of the saucer, or on the aft section of the pylon?

Impulse drive is on the lower hull.

LS and RS are SFB-speak, so I need to check, does that mean direct port and direct starboard firing points?  I don't see her making a splash as a combat ship and my current thinking is drawing me more towards a Y or V configuration for phasers, with perhaps an additional dorsal and ventral firing point for overall improved coverage.  I'm still reluctant to give her torps, but I may concede that before I'm done.

LS is left 180 degrees  from 180 to 0 and RS is 0 to 180 (rightside).
