Anyone having problems with the Recacher tool?
« on: March 31, 2009, 08:55:13 am »
Just got a new laptop, installed  win xp 98 (hate vista really) and everything is running fine... even sfc games, but when I launch the recacher (sfc3 model tools) it loads the mesh, renders it and then after a few seconds gives an error. Also, The taldren model attribute editor kind of bugs also, since it crashes when I try to close it via the menu but that is just a minor inconvenience.

I have downloaded several packages of "sf3 modelling tools" from several places, and the situation didn't change. Already tried to set different compatibility settings... no avail....

anyone had any recent/similar problems? Or can give a hand?

Thanks,

What's your video chipset of the laptop? SFC3 model recacher has problems with integrated chipsets.

Hmmm hope it is not that, it's an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3600.

Err, what does the re-cacher tool do?  All it's ever done for me is lock up and crash!

First thing that I'd check.. if you're running the laptop on Windows 98, pull the driver and install one of the older WDM drivers.  You'll need that for the older versions of Windows.  http://www.omegadriver.net is a good place to go for drivers, and here's the link for what you should need:

But back up your current video driver in case the WDM driver doesn't work.. you may need to revert back.  Running a newer card on an older OS can be tricky..
..ooOOoo..totally useless information..ooOOoo..

in a very simplistic way, recacher makes a .x file from the mod file, allowing the taldren model attribute editor to work. SFC3 itself can do the same thing, but i was travelling and had no sfc installed.

thanks atheorhaven, but it simply refused to work on the laptop, eventually I got home and used the desktop.

I get .X files (which are DirectX 3D models, I think) when I use the Attribute editor!  I'm constantly shift-deleting them (to skip the recycle bin) to save space.  That and "above8bittextures.txt from the taldren viewer, but I've learned that - get this; if the model USES 8-bit textures, that file won't appear! WOW!!!!

SFC 3 uses the x-files as the model in the game at distances it is the LOD files that SFC 1 and 2 use.

The above textures is because SFC 1 used PCX files as the texture base and they are 8 bit. so if you save them as 8 bit or as PCX you don't get that file. Also as a note SFC 1 and 2 only show 8 bit textures during the game all the colour and higher details tend to wash out during the game. Think it shows the higher version only during a screen shot but not sure.

It is odd that it would use only 8bit color as the UI is all in 16 bit hicolor.  But it could have been done for speed of rendering on those older systems. (but using an 8bit lookup table shouldn't really be quicker then using the 16 bit data directly)  [but again, not into graphics so not sure how it works at the directx level]

So they aren't directX/direct3D models?

Yes they are, it uses the model for close shots and the x file for all others if my memory is correct.

SFC 1 and 2 used a actual phyisical model for those called LOD (load on Distance) models.
It means that the creators had to make the main model and two other lower poly models, usually one the less details the farther it got. It would also mean three sets of textures as will smaller and less detailed on the smaller models.
