skirmish/campaign in starfleet command 1 (original)?
« on: March 19, 2009, 12:36:59 am »
Okay so I am on a mac running sfc1 through crossovers.

I have the game legally, and hadn't played it for 4-5 years or more, and decided to bust it out since I haven't played any like games recently.

The above isn't the problem, the setup screen, opening video, etc runs great, the only problem is when I select one of the races, the 'skirmish' and 'campaign' are blocked out, and multiplayer doesn't work.  I just wanted to play a few skirmishes to remind me of the old days.

Any idea what is wrong and how to fix this.  It didn't ask me for a serial number and it installed perfectly well.  Maybe it is a graphics thing, or a security something?  I paid for the game a long-time ago and have it legally, so it isn't a demo or anything.
Ideas?  Ty.

Crossover is a proprietary branch of Wine right?

Well, wine still does not include directplay. Though dll overrides can make OP/EAW work partially for multiplayer. (I have never tried SFC1 under wine - but have tried EAW and OP)

Note the wine appdb classes SFC1 as "Garbage" and OP as "Silver":

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=6713
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=6514

Heh, look someone rated EAW 2036 as "Gold":

Are you running Crossover Mac or Crossover Games? You might have better luck with the latter.

Might be worth skipping the opening video by editing the shortcut as for OP.

The fact that you were not prmpted for a CD key should be an indicator that it might not work well at all.

Do you have SFC1 CD in the CD-ROM? The issue is identical when the game needs the disc but cannot find it. You should also be able to find a no-cd crack somewhere, or apply the 1.03 patch if you haven't done it.

I'm surprised you can go that far with Crossover in Mac. For me, SFC1 never works for wine/crossover in Linux.

Oh, btw, SFC1 does not need a CD-key to play.

I'm running Crossover Games.  Yea I have a EAW too but will have to search around for the cd key....it's been a long time since xD

I have vmware and parallels which I guess are worth a try too, but if wine doesn't support directplay then don't know if it will work.  I just had my hopes up because it all installed and loaded smoothly, but yea you're right.

I will try getting the 1.03 patch then try it out again.  I was just running it with no patches installed or such, and yea from the CD in the CD-ROM.  Maybe the non-disk crack with fix it.  Ty.
