Topic: Greatest songs of the last 30 years(or so)

I'm in a bit of a melancholy mood tonight, so I'll lay the ground rules. NO hip-hop or rap. R&B and Soul are allowed, but if Snoop Dogg enters the conversation, the contestant is out.

I've tried to narrow it down to 10, but some bands make that difficult, so I've narrowed it down to "anything by...." BTW: if I exceed the 30 year limit, it's because some of this stuff is timeless.

8. The City Beneath the Sea by Harry Connick, Jr.

7. Lady Love Me by George Benson

6. Sympathy for the Devil by The Rolling Stones(okay, I'm passing on the timeline, but this is classic Stones, and Mick not only sang about the Romanovs and Russian Revolution, but the Panzers and Blitzkrieg. How could you not love a modern military synopsis in a classic rock-n-roll song?) Like The Who, I always felt that it was fun to be a little bit bad by liking the Stones.

5. Anything by Swingout Sister

4. Tell Me Where it Hurts by Kathy Tracolli

3. All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix(yeah, it exceeds the timeline I set, but it's one of the greatest guitar songs I've ever heard, and it is the finale song of the last episode of the new BSG, as Baltar and Six walk off...)

1. While the Night is Still Young by Billy Joel.

LOL...All along the watchtower is written by mr robert zimmerman...AKA Bob Dylan....who has written a BUNCH of incredible songs... A few for the uninitiated, that are not in pop mainstream that should be looked up on youtube...Jokerman, ISIS!!!, Hurricane, John Brown, Its alright Ma (im only bleeding) and several handfuls of more goodness.

Ill add a couple dead tunes to the mix

Peggyo, sugaree, brokedown palace, throwing stones, blow away, scarlet begonias, and many many more.

I'm with Soreyes on the Yes choices..and many of the band's solo projects..

Jethro Tull, mostly the middle years, but there are bursts of brightness other times..

Jazz is Dead..instrumental covers in a jazzy way of the Grateful Dead..

Well, Prince writes great music, but not the stuff he sings for himself.  Personal opinion.   He is one of the most talented song writers ever, but I like about 10% of what he writes for himself (puple rain is not in that 10% sorry) just me.

lol, It's actually not my favorite Prince song either (I have a little guilty pleasure in Raspberry Beret, Darling Nikki and countless others including many on his newer albums), but when it comes on out of the blue it does take me somewhere.  What it is, is an easily accessible song with emotion, and the riff is noticeable right from the start and despite it's simplicity it is big and can bring an entire arena to it's feet.  Yeah, there are other songs that belong on the list, but this popped in my head immediately.

Well, that is the best part about something as personall as music, ask 100 people what the best song of the last 30 years was, and you get 110 answers.

I like "I'll be watching you" it was the first song heard after a breakup.  It is just a song I like now, the emotion that was linked to it was released now but it has tainted my opinion of it.

I actually thought about it and realized I brought up songs going back into the '60s. 'All Along the Watchtower' is just my favorite of the many brilliant songs Jimi Hendrix did, and if you saw the final scene of the finale of the new "Battlestar Galactica" it's played as you drift into a Dr. Strangelove sort of problem that's both humorous and scrary in just what exactly have the survivors of Caprica brought to Earth?
