Accused rogue admin Terry Childs makes his case
« on: February 21, 2009, 08:48:00 pm »
After reading what his attorney has had to say in filings Terry fumbled his bits and bytes. As a network engineer I think he failed in his duty to turn over those pwds to his supervisor and very well may have violated the law.

I can see a suspension, but what law did he violate? He didn't steal the passwords, they are still technically the City's. Things like this always worry me in a work place. You will tell me what you know etc. etc. even if it is there business, as in this case, I would myself probably refuse to Give information under duress.

With physical access to the servers I cannot see why his successors did not simply reset the administrative passwords.

I suspect this is revenge of his old underlings who have not informed the pointy haired boss that they can simply reset the admin password then remove his account(s).

Passwords are only for the user to know. (Check CFR21Part11) Withholding his password is proper procedure. Accessing the network without authorisation after being terminated is a no-no though. But as mentioned, his successors could have easily prevented that. They were negligent in their due diligence. (Or honey-potting their old boss that they did not like)

If their WAN network software does not allow for this, then someone made a very very bad purchasing decision.

What would they have done had Terry gotten hit by a bus and died while still employed with them in good standing? This looks like either an obvious set-up or just plain organisational incompetence.

I agree Bonk. A reset would've solved the issue immediately. Been there, done that.

This has the odor of Bossism gone amok. Otoh, some of Child's actions and attitudes read a bit more than just mildly provocative. Imo, there was a lot of tango music being played, and the argument started with who was going to lead. Things seem to have escalated from there.
