Opinions on windows 7?
« on: February 19, 2009, 01:34:01 pm »
I'm sure some on these boards have grid out windows 7. I was wondering if I could get some thoughts on it. I'm traditionally mac user though I have to use windows at work. I saw a blog on cnet today where the blogger claimed hands down that windows 7 was the greatest OS ever, Whig caught me by surprise since the last comments I heard about it was that microsoft was just blatantly copying mac OS features.

So anyways, impressions of windows 7?  Likes? Dislikes?

it rocks.  Works fine even on a original single Core Centrino system I tested it on.   The Beta is stable as hell.  MS hit one out of the park with this OS.

One of my concerns with Windows 7 Beta is that perhaps as a beta all of the cycle and memory hogging services of XP and Vista may not be in the beta.  So, everyone is running this scaled down version of the OS on many different types of hardware and having a great experience with an OS that isn't fully fleshed out.

I hope to be proven wrong as people even seem to be running it successfully on netbooks.

One thing that people using the Windows 7 beta (and other prerelease versions) should remember is that Vista RC1 had some features timed to stop working on a set date.  So just don't get too set on using a prerelease indefinitely.  Some features may cut out unexpectedly.

Note I have not used any version of Windows after XP and have no plans to.

I have been testing the Panda3D engine on Win7 and haven't found anything that didn't work so far. The only problem I have had was that no OpenGL driver is available for my X1350 video card so I can only test it on DirectX.

I'm running it in a VPC configure for XP.

Well, Windows 7 is pretty stable, as everyone's already said.  Fast.

Only gripe I have is that MAX 5 doesn't work at all on Windows 7 and OP is sluggish on the D2, and sometimes, and this is personal experience, sometimes it can't connect to the access server, with the error of a firewall blocking my connection, when there was no firewall at all.

Other than that, I've had pretty good experiences.

Oh, and the best part, I loaded a DVD into the computer, and WMP12 played it without any problems or delays.  I was surprised to say the least.  Also, I found out Office 2000 works on Windows 7 without problems also.

If there were SFC plugins for MAX 9, and OP could be made to work with Windows 7 flawlessly, I'd actually considered upgrading to Windows 7.

By the time MS is done with it, it will load too many services into memory and run slower than any previous MS OS.

I think Windows 7 can basically be considered Better than Vista, but not quite back there to XP(mainly due to D2)

How much of the DRM has been removed?  How many of the programs "bundled" with it can actually be totally removed?

This is a beta. I think that'll be better answered with the RTM image.

This means SFC actually will run okay on win7 though without having to be a computer genius to figure out how to do it?

Perhaps, but if you're planning on playing the D2, you're gonna have serious lag with online play.

The D3 will still connect easily, but I haven't flown an SFC3 server with Windows 7, but dyna play on SFC3 should be just fine.

SFC1, I have no idea.

Thanks.  Wow.  Win7 already sounds better possibly then Vista which I have avoided like the plague.  If they just work out whatever is causing the lag online it will be perfect!

This blog post talks about a few of the improvements that will be in our Release Candidate (RC) based upon customer feedback. There are many under the hood changes (bug fixes, compatibility fixes, performance improvements, and improvements) across the entire dev team that we just don’t have room to discuss here, but we thought you’d enjoy a taste of some changes made by three of our feature teams: Core User Experience, Find & Organize and Devices & Media.  The comments in this article come from a variety of verbatim sources, with identifying information withheld.
