Just remember the picture of the guy who has the car showing through him is not the cloaking device they are talking about in the article.   The device from the article is a wave guide.  It bends the waves around a central point but it is a hard case that would fit around it.

The most recent thought of use of this device would be to make support poles disappear in stadiums so you can see and hear better.

Now they do have a device that works sort of like the picture of that guy, but it actually takes a live image of what is behind and projects the image on the front so it can fool the eye into not seeing the object being used as a screen.
