All Pilots on The Forge, Coalition AND Alliance
« on: January 31, 2009, 02:00:43 am »
Please, please, PLEASE....turn off your firewalls...
This means the Windows firewall, software firewalls and if you're behind a router, the router firewalls.
This makes for laggy missions, dropped players and bugged missions.

I know most of you do this, but a few newer pilots lately have admitted they run Firewalls while playing... :o
SFC has always been sensitive to firewalls, one of it's downsides, but, they need to be OFF, not set for execptions or open ports, etc. OFF!! DISABLED!!

They know who they are since it has been mentioned to them in text chat.

Please comply.

Can we make that an official Forge rule...?

I agree with Krueg, it should be a rule for all servers in my book

The sfc2.net rules that I use as a guideline cover it:
Quote
9.
If you are having a bad connection, either dropping a lot or causing your opponents to constantly drop, we ask that you stop playing for a while and try again later or move away from any other players on the map. If your connection continues to cause problems we ask that you do not play on SFC2.Net until you get a better connection.

Krueg  you  may  not  play  other  games  but  some  of us  do and  it  is  account based  meaning  anyone  can hack  into it  a  firewall gives  you  that  extra security. This  is  important  for  those  who have  data  on thier  machines as well. When ppl start  stealing account  information or  data  off  your  hard drive  it  becomes  your own fault.

I will never  turn  mine firewall  off for any no reason. Those  that  play  MMO type  games  can have  thier  entire account  wiped clean.I have  heard  nightmares about this and  there  is  nothing  the  publisher  or  developer can do about it.

Yeah, I play lots of other games online.
But tell me how many times that's happened in SFC...?
Np, if you are unwilling to turn off the firewall, stay out of the front when there are live players on hunting you.
Especially after you get drafted a couple times and it drops or won't load. Don't continue to sit there and have it happen over and over.
Having a firewall on while on the D2 can bug a mission when players drop, forcing them to alt F4 to get out of the mission because it won't end, and it is well known Alting can corrupt the Database of the server, possibly forcing a restart of the server, therefore wiping all players accumulated accounts...hmmm. whattodowhattodo...
I posted that because many newer players had no idea of the issues with firewalls and sfc.
I wasn't trying to start a debate and didn't really request opinions, only asking for compliance of the General rules of the D2.
But your opinion is yours to express.

This is a standard server RULE.... :rules:

Not up for debate :point:

You are free to play the game however you like...but,

You are not free to impact other people's enjoyment of the game on a server you do not host on your own PC.... :coolsmiley:

Firewalls have been proven to effect performance on the dynaverse.....this is well known and not a myth... :knuppel2:

If you insist on playing SFC through a firewall...STAY OFF THE FRONT. :hoppin:

Who the hell is talking about MMO games? I'm talking about here, the D2, how many times has that happened? Oh, NEVER!!
On the other hand, DB corruption from altF4ing has happened, several times, resulting in everyone losing their accounts.

Read what  no#3 saysFire WallI play  other  games  and  don't want to lose  all my  hard  work. It  isn't  the firewall it  is the  internet  as  when  I play  Guild Wars  we get  players  who get  disconnnected all the  time  and  it isn't thier  computer  or  the server. It is  the  internet  and  this  is in PvP battles 8vs8 all the time. We  always  play  with  our  firewall on.I am not  talking  about  SFC2OP  I am talking  about  server  account  based  game.Your  account information about  your  char  is stored  on the server and  if it  gets  deleted  it can't be replaced that is  what  I fear.

I have  heard  horror  stories  of  those  who lost  thier  accounts and  would  you ever  tell Frey  to turn off the  firewall to D.net.I don't  think so it  is  just  the  internet  latenacey  that  is what  drops  players  not  a  firewall or  I would  be  dropping  from all my  pvp games which I don't.

would  you ever  tell Frey  to turn off the  firewall to D.net.I don't  think so

We ran Dynaverse.net in the wide open, no firewall at all for over two years, not a single intrusion. A firewall is not exclusively responsible for server security.

it  is  just  the  internet  latenacey  that  is what  drops  players  not  a  firewall or  I would  be  dropping  from all my  pvp games which I don't.

What will adding another software layer to your TCP/IP stack do? Add latency. That much is sure. Here's one for you: many software firewalls can ADD vulnerabilities and DoS weaknesses to a system.

This has been discussed to death.

It goes like this, if you are too scared to play SFC with no firewalls running, then you must announce on the server that you are running a software firewall, and then stay out of the busy hexes. Play behind the lines.

When you are confident in the security of your OS installation and do not have any junk software installed, turn that software firewall off and come on up to the front to join the action.

Final word.

Age, let me tell you, I play Warhammer, and World of Warcraft.  I play with no firewalls, I play in the DMZ of my router because Civilization IV won't connect to certain people if I don't.  Because I play Civilization IV all the time, I am ALWAYS in the DMZ.  Not once have I had even an attempt of an attack.  I keep my Anti Virus up to date, and I have a Spyware scanner that I run every day as well.

Even if you have a firewall, you can still get into trouble if you're not careful where you go on the internet.  In fact, more times than not, having that firewall makes you think that you're invincible and can go anywhere, then you wind up getting an infection.  Because after all is said and done, a Firewall is just that, a wall.  People and things can go around it, over it or under it.  Does it help?  Sure.  But if some one really wants in, do you think that firewall is going to stop it?  Not likely.

Case in point, my brother and step brother shared a computer and played WoW.  It was behind a firewall, in fact it was behind TWO firewalls, software and router.  My step-brother decided that he couldn't make money fast enough and logged on to a gold farming site.  Despite the fact that my brother didn't do anything, those gold farmers got his account information as well.  My brother got a new computer, but doesn't want to got through the hassle that Activision is making him go through to get his account back (they closed it because of the breach).

And yes I said Activision, they bought out Blizzard last year...

Any legitimate MMORPG company should be keeping regular backups of ALL their server shards that they can easily restore any deleted/corrupted character from.
Otherwise, they can never have any plan for servers failing, power disruptions that'll cause the server to suddenly shut down, human error, and faulty memory module that might corrupt a character, or a group of characters, who knows.
How far back their backups go depends, but they should have SOMETHING.

Again though, stories, but yes there is something they can do about it if anything like that did happen, assuming they have ever heard of backups and reseting accounts.

A software firewall hardly matters in this case either though. A hacker is still capable of cracking through. It'll just take a couple more minutes while they apply and firewall cracking algorithms/programs or perform DoS/Brute force entry and presto they are in. No biggie.

If you feel that way, then put all your MMO's and sensative data on a secondary Hard Drive(+clear internet cache/cookies) and disconnect it before lowering your firewall for OP.

A LOT of other things depend on secure communication from computer to computer. Secure those other things and you'll be as secure as you can be without interfering with other people's gaming experience/connectivity and without the firewall for OP so you can move to the front lines.

They  do have  backup but  they  aren't  going  to restore  one account  for  4  million players  playing  the  game. There  are  40,000 players  playing  GW compared  to 3 to 6  on Dyna on average day

I can not  because  it is  all on server  anyone  with  GW  account  can get  access  to  any  Guild  Wars  accounts.I don't  have  the  game  on my  computer  only  the  client. When the server  gets shut down for maintance  I can't  play  GW.

What  about  those on dail up they  have  more issues  of  dropping than those  with  firewalls?NCSoft  and  ArenaNet  have  looked at  this  and have  said  it  is  networking  problem for  GW players  dropping.I can stay  connected  to  thier servers  for  hours.Don't  forget  people  get  disconnected  from phones as well.

Age...gonna keep it simple:

DONT PLAY SFC THOUGH A FIRWALL!

It screws up the game....NOT FOR YOU...BUT FOR OTHERS....

Go everywhere else on the internet wrapped in 15 firewalls and proxie servers....

but....

DONT PLAY SFC THROUGH A FIREWALL!

I dont give a flying crap what you do at other sites , on other servers, or what you think others would do....

on the bright side, I actually got SFC OP to work on wireless - no fracking idea how or why, but a new wireless adapter and a neighbour's spanking new router one floor down ( no idea what type) seem to have done it. I didn't even mention port forwarding etc. so no idea either if I an somehow DMZ or he is gamer so has set up his router that way. Magic. I do drop every third mission or so, for whatever reason, so I won't use it for PvP or on the Front until I am stable. ( and I am giving him $ for his bandwidth oh-you-suspicious-types)

I won't  and  I will not  lower  my  firewall I guess  my  Dyna days  are  over.I guess  I will never  get  a  chance  for  retribution on you  and  Dizzy.I had  fun on all those  servers  but  without  a  win it  gets   kind  of  you  know. When Dogmantrix  come  back  if  he does  tell him to  get  2 PCs  1  for  this  game  the other  for EveOnline so he  can keep his  firewall on.

I thought  you  were  going  to  honour  the  original  Licensing  between Interplay  and  Paramount now CBS.

I still say  this  whole  thing  is  networkiong  issue as  said  in previouse  post.

Bye Bye  Dyna

How are they not honoring the original licensing?  If you don't play by the rules you don't play.  There has been nothing wrong with people who don't have Firewalls and anti-spyware, and other system monitoring programs running while playing.  Yes, the network coding for SFC was shoddy, but it can work, if you do the right thing.  Don't think that this is a problem specific to SFC, because if you do, you'll be very disappointed.  This is a VERY common issue with older games, and even newer programs.  You seem to have completely ignored that Civilization doesn't work properly with firewalls either.

One further bit of information for you though, MMOs keep all of their information server side, not client side.

You  might  want  to read  what  it  say  here  linky
I know  all the  information is  kept server  side  which  is  why  they  won't  do a  role  back it  will inconvience  over 40,000 players on average  day.
