Topic: Question regarding PNY 9800 GT 1GB Vid Card (Read 1084 times)

Query - I got a pretty good deal on an out of print 9800 1gb pny card - a big upgrade from my Dell provided 6800 GTO - but I am going to try and run it on my Dell 350 PSU.

I hear the Dell PSU's are actually underated - and that this should be okay?

Anyone have any opinion on this - the last thing I want to do is blow my PSU (and several other components) with it.

And this isn't just a matter of me being cheap - I have not been able to find a reasonably priced PSU (with 400 or more) that will fit in my Dell case.

So any recommendations there would be really appreciated too.

Looking on Toms Hardware, they did a review of power usage for different systems. Here's the link. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-radeon-power,2122.html

From a quick glance, it looks like you'd be pushing it with that card. I wouldn't recommend it, but if it's a good enough deal you might give it a try.

I was going to suggest you do a power audit of your system yourself, but if your system or a similar one is listed at Tom's they probably have a better estimate.

But, many cases depend on the power supply fan for overall ventilation and this solution does not consider this appropriately in my view. But it may not be as significant, since the power supply itself is removed.

Same power supply I bought to upgrade my Dell Dimension E521 to accommodate an ATI HD4850 512 MB card. It's a 500W PSU that is specfically Dell-compatible.

Awesome! - Thank you so much for the extremely helpful replies!!

It looks like my PSU - according to all the calculations I have done - should actually work (at least in theory) with the 350 PSU - but it's good to know I have reasonable options if it doesn't!

This is hopefully just a stop gap until I can put a I7 machine together - tho in this economy it's hard to make my "hobby" a priority.

At least now I should be able to get my Total War on! (well - maybe not the new one)
