Recomend some movies
« on: November 29, 2008, 04:51:47 pm »
So I recently started up a netflix membership again, and already I'm drawing a blank. Denny and I have watched most of the seasons to CSI to NCIS to Fall guy, to movies like Iron man, hulk, Hancock, Godzilla movies (toho).

What are some good ones I missed? I recently ordered those russian films Day watch and Night watch, but after that, I'm drawing a blank.

Thought you might, Baraka is an excellent film. Both it and Birdy have wonderful soundtracks.

As far as movies that I've liked that you might not have
Unbreakable
October Sky
Superman II the Richard Donner Cut
Patriot Games
Jet Pilot (poor storyline, but the film was shot with the cooperation of the US airforce and has excellent footage of aircraft that were in service at the time, as well as stunt flying by Chuck Yeager.  The airforce subsequently reversed itself repressed the film for 10 years because they felt the footage gave away too much information on its capabilities.)

Thanks man, I'll have to check them out also.

Here is an excerpt from Baraka, the song is ""The Host of Seraphim" by Dead Can Dance (gets me every time) - crank to eleven for best enjoyment:

More of Baraka:

http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=baraka&search_type=&aq=f

A trailer for Birdy (awesome Peter Gabriel soundtrack):

More on Birdy:

While I'm at it, I might as well recommend another film with an untouchable soundtrack by Peter Gabriel:

http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=The+Last+Temptation+of+Christ&search_type=&aq=f
Oh cool! An interview with Pete on the soundtrack:

This was the beginning of Pete's Real World Records label.
http://realworldrecords.com/

The gem of the Real World label: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan  (He died not long before I saw Pete in Toronto, and he was scheduled to be on the tour...  :'()

I guess for me, the soundtrack is what makes a film.

Oh, and I assume you've seen Catch 22? (not from Blockbuster - they cut the ending)

Being back on cable is cool, I can actually use YouTube now.  8)

Another soundtrack film:

Whale Music

Excellent music, heartbreaking/heartwarming story. Though wikipedia calls it a comedy. It is not. With Paul Gross of Due South fame.

The beast needs more torque!  ;D

The hit song from the soundtrack:
Claire

(or on CBC: http://radio3.cbc.ca/play/band/RHEOSTATICS/Claire/)

Another song from the soundtrack album:
Shaved Head (Embedding disabled, limit reached)

More from the Rheostatics, just because they rock:
The Rheostatics&; Group Of Seven on CBC's The National (Embedding disabled, limit reached)
Quote
Oh, the shape of things, that can't be seen,
the blue hysteria, the hue of sin,
are as real as these things you deem pure...

 :notworthy:

It's Canadian culture night on Dynaverse.net with Bonk!  ;D

This is another movie for the high end home theater audio system cranked to eleven. Neither of the youtube clips do justice to the quality of the soundtrack of course.

My favorite Rheostatics song of all time:
http://radio3.cbc.ca/play/band/RHEOSTATICS/Northern-Wish/
OK, I'll stop now.
