Reasons for Microsoft Choosing the Name Windows 7

11.    It's the number of years before it'll be released.
10.    Proves that Windows is only three versions behind Apple.
9.    Product naming team wanted to leave early to beat rush hour.
8.    With so few names not trademarked, Windows 7 sounded better than Windows Popplers.
7.    Because as they say at Microsoft, seventh time's the charm.
6.    Instead of using release years, new editions will now be named according to years until the robot uprising.
5.    Pretty sure 7 doesn't mean anything offensive in any foreign language.
4.    Drawing comparisons to the seven deadly sins with name just too irresistible.
3.    It's the number of debuggers working on this version.
2.    Signifies the number of billions Bill Gates lost in the stock market last week.
1.    Want to remind users of the good old days of Windows for Workgroups 3.11 instead of Vista.

Actually I think that they missed the real reason.  The names were getting too long.

"What OS do you use?"  "I use Microsoft Windows Vista Premium Deluxe Home Server service pack 2."   

They were forgetting to apply the K.I.S.S. principle to naming.  It used to be "I use Windows"  and a version identifier they need to get back to simpler naming.  Home users especially shouldn't be faced with so many variations.  "Windows Home" and "Windows Media Center" should be the two home versions.   Now if there were in fact competing suppliers of Windows it would make more sense to have more versions.  Each competitor could have their own versions of those basic variations.  Instead of "Microsoft Windows Home"  it could be "Dynaverse Windows Home" for example. 

The confusion (and lawsuit) over the whole Windows Vista capable labelling wouldn't be likely to be there if the naming were simpler.

Oh, I agree completely. You should have seen the confusion even IT geeks had over all the different version/feature paradigms.

I've seen a bit of it.  I can't actually think of anyone I know (outside these forums) who has gone to Vista.  There seems to be a lot more resistance to Vista than any prior form of Windows (even Win ME).

I've seen a bit of it.  I can't actually think of anyone I know (outside these forums) who has gone to Vista.  There seems to be a lot more resistance to Vista than any prior form of Windows (even Win ME).

I've been using Vista Ultimate x64 for quite a while now...

Outside Dominion Wars, Birth of the Federation, ST: Hidden Evil and the SFC II game titles, all my software works on Vista..

Busines apps, PSP Photo X2, Adobe CS3, Flash Player 10, MS Office 2008, IE 8, and many many games, including BF 1942, NWN with all expansions, Hellgate London, Crysis, Tron 2.0, Max Payne 1 & 2 (though I did have to recompile the sound for Max Payne 1, but that took all of 2 min with the included tools), Armada, Armada II, Elite Force 1 and 2, Splinter Cell, KOTOR and KOTOR II (KOTOR II needed the MSS32.dll from KOTOR I to prevent random crashes), Sins of a Solar Empire, Jedi Knight II : Outcast, and several other titles.. all currently installed on this rig and all under Vista..

I have this rig dual booting for XP just so I can play SFC II titles on the Dyna, BOTF, Dominion Wars and Hidden Evil.

I can play Single player and GSA and TCP/IP on the SFC II Titles under Vista without a problem. Also the server kit runs great under Vista as well.
