Atolm's Triaxian redux
« on: November 17, 2008, 12:52:36 am »
In my other thread there was a hexagonical ship I modelled out based off of a snowflake. Atolm asked me, I believe based off of idea of that ship, to revisit his Triaxian ships and to FoaSize them. He asked me to bang out a quick CA model, just to see what its all about. I guess you could call this a redesign of a redesign. In about half an hour, I modelled out a mesh. I have two versions, one with the nacelles on the ship's Z-Axis centerline, and another one with them raised slightly above the hull. I'm not really sure which of them I should fly with. They came out to about 2,000 polygons, but I don't have any details modelled out (impulse engines, deflectors, shuttlebay, etc). I don't really know what Triaxians use for heavy weapons, but I'll dig up some SFB manuals to find out.

Raised version.

Centerline version.

I went with the nacelles-up version. Added some missing-plating and other details. Still no shuttlebay or impulse engines or deflectors quite yet.

perhaps a ship like this ought to be designed with nacelles that don't look directional but instead look more like fatter versions of the pannels on the array from voyager (the one barkly used to contact them). The ship does kinda look like it would warp into itself. It would keep more with the flake design as well.

Panels would be a neat idea on something else, but the Triaxians from SFB use nacelles and I want to keep to that. Also, in SFB the idea of the triaxians is that they can move in three directions, I assume that when moving they use one or two nacelles at a time. Furthermore, a warp field can exist around a ship in a toroidal fashion and then bent and poked into a propelling shape by the properly facing nacelle.

btw, This ship isn't based off of a snowflake, but rather Atolm SAW my snowflake ship, reminded him about his Triaxians, and then asked me to revisit them.

I think the raised version is the better of the two but like starforce i am having a little difficulty with the orientation of the three engines.  But what the heck, it is your design therefore go for it.

The tech in SFB is they can rotate the warp field in 120° increments. I could see how the triangle arrangement of 3 nacelles could accomplish that. To generate a bubble that could be rotated I would suggest that the nacelles should "see" each other, possibly?

Not only can they rotate 120 degrees but they can slide in the two directions that are 120 degrees from the front of the ship

even the original triaxians looked more like flying stations ore platforms and this looks to like a platform with three nacelles
the arrangement of the nacelles is good but maybe making them thiker, embed them more into the main hull and add the warpgrills on top and bottom of them would make it less fragile looking
