GAFY does it again!!!
« on: October 04, 2008, 10:29:00 pm »
His textures continue to get better and better.  Anyone that disagrees, look at the renders below.

TMP Eisenhower

TNG Eisenhower

Models are done by WickedZombie45, textures are done by GotAFarmYet?, and the renders are done by me.

The models will be released soon, so stay tuned.

that almost looks worthy of a TV series or fan movie. Only gripe would bee the wierd triangle shadows on the dorsal phasers which mar and otherwise perfect render.

WZ made an instant classic with the Valiant. His textures were awesome and he also has a personal pirate version for his personal use that is really cool. I  released a kitbash for use in a "ShadowFleet" called the Darkstar. Now GAFY is gonna give us even more fodder to work with! Nice Job GAFY. And Thanks to WZ for an unbelievably sweet twist on the Connie design.

These textures are obviously well done. I absolutely admire the skill it took to make them.
Now, its not quite what I would have done - particularly the sawtooth pattern of the edges of the dark areas. Also, not big on the eight-pointed star on the deflector.
Despite that, the textures are both subtle and strong.

I think the sawtooth pattern you're referring to are problems I still can't figure out during the render process.  I always get complaints.

No, you're thinking of the shadows. That problem is simply because you didn't have enough samples on your shadow maps. Using raytrace shadows would fix it also.
Now im actually talking about the stepped edges of the darker painted areas

Thanks,
The Saw tooth pattern was kind of the point it was orginally meant to be all over the ship, including the bump map. I changed it to the more traditional lines on the secondary hull and saucers at the last moment as I thought it got to far away from pausiable. The darker areas are done in a green and silver or a blend of them with a white under lay at about 75% solid. I was hoping to soften the a bit from the hulls bump pattern with it. I might reapply it as it would be easy enough to do with the build files I have, but I was planning on the pattern there for a gray and blue version with phaser strips on both models. Once again trying to push the envelope of the acceptable, before it was with colours now it is with patterns. Lets face it the only two ppl who liked the dark blue/purple was me and you, the aqua was liked by mackie. If it wasn't for Mackie using it on all his kitbashed ships I would never have done the orginals in it, with a few of his bashes most of the ships were only a texture or two from done anyways so I completed them. Got a really strong you suck feed back at those too, my favorite being everything else looks good but that colour looks like it was done with a box of crayons. Made me make sure I did everything I could in that colour

But yes the tooth pattern was orginally the point of the textures, and left it on the engines most notiably.

Well to tell the truth the inner deflector area was a place holder, where I choked. Could not think of what I wanted to do there to complete it so I left it there. When you see the actual texture you will notice it pretty quickly that it doesn't really match the rest of the work, looks flat. If you have a better idea let me know, it can always be added as a altnerate texture or more than likly used as a replacement.

would it have helped to have kept the more saw tooth look throughout the ship, in the bump maps so to speak?

Cent would like a more detailed explaination of the shadow part. He doesn't know how to fix it, nor do I, I can't help him as the only experience I have with a modelling progarm is Milkshape.

Don't get me wrong, I admire and respect, a great deal, what you've done.

I think more people liked the blue textures than you give credit for. I've gotten some pretty good feedback on my versions, which were but really an extension of yours - albeit FoaSized. I definately follow what you mean, though. Taking a project in an actual direction with that kind of purpose. "What can I do with white?" "what can I do with patterns?" "what can i do with Fractals?" etc etc. A very cool approach. Definitely a departure from the usual "what'll look good here?"

When I get back into texturing my feds, I might have to steal a few ideas again, assuming you don't mind GAFY - particularly, I love what you did around the bottom of the secondary hull, with the half round dark-bit under the deflector.

Btw, GAFY/Centurus. the whole shadow thing.
If you are using 3ds Max, when you have a light selected, to improve the shadow quality you can do 2 things: one is change your shadow type from "Shadow Map" to "Raytraced Shadows" you're shadows will be very crisp, but it will not have that wierd jaggie quality to it.
Your other option is to keep the "Shadow Map", but play with your shadow properties. Under the "Shadow Map Params" rollout you'll see three spinners. I usually keep my Bias at 1.0, Size at 512, and Sample Range at 4.0. messing with these will create different results. Higher sizes means smoother, but crisper details, so you have to take up the sample range as well if you want to keep them soft.

I don't take it personal FoaS, infact I rarily get any feed back at all, with the latest stuff I have been doing. The normal feed back is "that looks beatiful" and then you hear crickets in the background.

So I take this as a oppertunity as finally someone willing to discuss this!

Nope not liking the saw tooth pattern is cool to me. What is it about the pattern that sets off the negitive in your mind is what I want to know. I know it is a different look and normally it means it takes a bit for ppl to warm up to, the blue textures are an example of that. Few liked them straight off, but over time ppl excepted them partly due to the fact that every fed ship in the game was starting to show up with them. Mostly it was due to the shock of something different wearing off, which becomes a form of acceptance. BTW it was the aqua setthat actually caused most of the hate reaction the darker version was pretty much excepted. The modelling ppl actually took to liking things better than the non-modellers who tend to be the harsh word writers with no respect. They are the usual "I hate it" comment with no other explaination. The respect also goes both ways here, I worked with you before a long time ago on the Excel kitbash fleet, still have the files too I think.

Don't mind at all FoaS, ideas or straight out texture borrowing I have no problems with I like ships to be released, rather then stuck on a HDD headed to oblivion. One of the reasons I have always had a free to use pollicy about textures: if you can't do them and can make mine fit and it gets the ship released then go for it. You can Blame WZ for that area it is his model after all, and It started silver and that ol "what'll look good here?" syndrome is what finally darkened it to the green you see. He did build a great ship, if you look at the mapping he did on it you will know why.

But I am curious what you thought of the impulse dome on the TNG one?
also if you have any ideas on what to put in the center of the delector, as it is atill a place holder there.

Think I might have come up with a idea after all, will add it to the Alternates folder. Yes there are altnerate textures for a few parts here and there that I could not make my mind up about

Okay, I've gone back over it and absorbed it further, and I've broken down my comment by area. The sawtooth on the secondary hull has grown on me. I think its the darker parts that come back to the center-line is what helps. Also, I think that the fact that it follows the contour of the secondary hull perfectly works well, too.

The sawtooths on the top of the saucer don't work for me. I feel like it breaks its own lines, repeatedly. I think that the first (forward most) step is good - even make it a bit steeper, and then it goes in a straight or slightly bowed (either in or out) curve to the edge of the saucer. I can produce an image if you need.

The bottom of the saucer is the same as the top.

The top of the neck, the jury is still out, but I'm leaning on not liking it. Again, it kinda confuses the lines, criss crossing them repeatedly.

The front of the nacelle, is eh. I didn't notice it at first. I would say just have one step but make it slightly bigger.

The deflector looks great!

If I could make one change it would simply be this. The inner blue area should be extruded out, like on a sovvie deflector. I know thats a model problem, though.

It kind of is, it pushes out just a bit and uses its own texture. I am not going to do any physical changes to the model for this set, but some work can be done to the texture area there to help that look.

I think....

I think its the darker parts that come back to the center-line is what helps. Also, I think that the fact that it follows the contour of the secondary hull perfectly works well, too.

That was the area I did first before shelving the project for a month, and probably the area that I was most happy with on the model, the next area being the engines. it was also where I had based the appearnce of the ship from, it was well working on the engines I started the over all change from the secondary hull look. It was also something I probably should not have done as I think you hit it on the head as to were things started to look not quite there. Over all the quality came out good, but yes there are two distinct patterns and I should have stayed with one.

think the over all look is still good, but I see your point pretty much on how I should have stayed to one idea.

Nope, I know what you are talking about as I was trying to blend a look. I was trying to get the top if you looked down at the ship to flow from middle of the saucer all the way down to the shuttle bay. I also wanted to follow the contours of the bridge and moved to a gray-green base with a green top look. So the dark area flowed out and then sucked in so to speak, should have just followed the brdge area for the effect to work right instead of getting overly ambishious. Good point I did add the hull pattern to it and should have left it to its own saw tooth pattern like I did on the secondary hull, and made the saucer pattern match up were it need to.

The bottom of the saucer is the same as the top.

No not really the pattern is the same but it was meant to match the work on the neck. It is closer to say the lower saucer was meant match the neck and be break away armour plates for a seperation. The top should have had its own pattern, and not matched the bottom. The lower part should be used to tie the neck and saucer together, the top should be a stand alone area.

The top of the neck, the jury is still out, but I'm leaning on not liking it. Again, it kinda confuses the lines, criss crossing them repeatedly.

Think if I had left grayish area solid and not applied the hull lines it would have worked better. The neck hull lines could have been easily made to adapt to the saw pattern. Again it suffers from the same problem as the top the saucer bowl curves up and then the outer area slopes in and then out. Think the saw areas suffer from the change in angle, and would work better on a standard Connie for that area.

The front of the nacelle, is eh. I didn't notice it at first. I would say just have one step but make it slightly bigger.

That one I think is ok as it matches the ratio on the saucer top. Plus the area it occupies starts to strech a bit on the curves their not much but it blurs the lines and I wanted a clean look there. There was no way to fix it or remap it to make it work, and I did not want the gray area any farther back. The TNG one allowed a different solution to the area and the better look for the engine front.

Over all you are correct in your observations I went from hull pattern to a painted on pattern somewhere while working on it. Don't know why I did that unless that break I took made me change my mind on how I want to continue to work on it. Will have to keep an eye out for that on the next version I do. I think the look still works as they do blend in well enough to hide most of what you saw, you really have to work at it to see things like that.

I feel a bit stupid for saying this, but I didn't even realise the saw-tooth was deliberately textured in, I thought it was some strange artefact of the render.  Maybe it's a sign that I should wear my glasses a lot more...  :-[

I'd love to see these textures applied to WZ's Argentena. Wasn't much of a fan of phaser strips... liked banks better.

Looking forward to having one :)

I'd love to see these textures applied to WZ's Argentena. Wasn't much of a fan of phaser strips... liked banks better.

Looking forward to having one :)

That would be the TMP Eisenhower, which are shown in the first 6 or so renders in the first post of this thread.  :-D

Hmm...

Well, I said Argentina because her phasers are in paired banks- not the TNG phaser strips I don't like so much. It's just a nitpick of mine since I don't think highly of TNG design aesthetic. Otherwise this is a perfect replacement for the F-CX.

Then again it looks like the phaser strips are just a product of textures, and easily edited out if I choose to do so. It just seemed to be the valiant variant because of the phaser strips on the pylons... they look like geometry in some shots, instead of just textures.

The TMP Eisenhower doesn't have phaser arrays, believe it or not.  They're more like micro slotted emitters.  And those aren't phasers on the pylons of the TMP Eisenhower, but a warp plasma flush vent or sorts.

GAFY can tell you the whole concept.

 Bingo!

They are also only on the top of the pylons and not the bottom, so if you wanted to edit those it would be easy to do. As for editing the strip phasers off, well yes on the Argentena they are basically painted on but the way the suacer is textured will not make them easy to remove, and keep the same look. Well I should say not going to be easy for anyone without the build files, as I designed those with that in mind.

You could probably use parts of the TNG saucer as a blanking texture for those areas. The area around the phasers uses the same pattern and I am sure I used the ssame base there.

Getting back to this abit.
I did use transparent areas in the Grays on the secondary hull, so I don't think continuing that trend is where it went wrong. Where I made the mistake is that I did not follw the outline of the sawtooth area as part of the armoured hull on nthe other places like I did on the secondary hull. They should have had the bump mapping follow the edges as they did on the lower hull to keep the same look. Also in keeping that look the gray area on the saucer should have also been smaller or a larger Green area to match the rest of the ship better.

Not that I am going to redo this set as they are a done deal.

It is more or less incase I decide to continue with the Blue or Red sets, and start to use them on other ships Ideas. The other ideas would require meshing and wrapping skills that I currently don't have though

Well, I decided to make some renders of the ship with the updated textures that GAFY sent.  2 of the pics are closeups of the deflector.  Is it just me, or is anyone else reminded of Iron Man when looking at the deflector?

I really like the way GAFY?'s done the deflector and the impulse crystal. I like the plating as well. Real good, but that's no surprise with GAFY?.

Please release the textures soon!!!!!!!!!!! They are absolutely awesome. I can't wait to remodel my Valiant!

GAFY - my favorite part is the deflector. Before this my other favorite deflector was yours as well - the one form the Chabot.

Nice work - thanks for sharing!

No. The giant phaser strips are the phasers. The dark spots on the edge of the saucer are dark spots on the edge of the saucer. If they are more than decoration, then they are sensor palettes.

Thanks,

The release is out of my hands and in Cents. Mostly it is based on time available for him to work on it. I know my time has gotten very tight again and it is going to delay things I am currently doing again. Both ships have altnerates folders with various different textures in them. The Argentina has different Deflectors, Warp, and Impulse textures, as well as Blanks. It also has the main set at different quality levels, low medium and High, for those who want smoother game play. I believe the ship is mostly down to testing though

HERE THEY ARE!!!

Eisenhower TMP:

http://starfleetcommand3.filefront.com/file/;97673

Eisenhower TNG:

http://starfleetcommand3.filefront.com/file/;97675

There are versions of both ships available for SFC1, SFC2, and SFC OP in the Alternates folder in each ship, along with alternate and blank textures for each ship.

I know it's been a long wait, but at least they're finally released.

GAFY? is awesome.  I could see a GAFY?-like texture set of the Defiant-Class.  I know you don't like tNG, but the Defiant's hull is (almost) uniquely suited to your texture styles.  I'm thinkin' LC Amaral/Legacy's Defiant.  I think pnuemonic81's Defiant is the one I used (LCAmaral's stuff never-ever has the HP's mapped, and no-one has answered my pleas to provide HP maps for his stuff), but I'm not too sure.  Still, it'd work!

Anyways back to this, picture?
and adding HP and DP to a model is easy. Just take a ship that already has them like the P81 Defiant and open it in GMax, Milkshape whatever you have and delete the model leaving the spine points and merger the model you want them on to it. You will have to adjust the points abit to help them fit the model but it is not hard
