What should I do with this PC?
« on: September 25, 2008, 01:21:52 pm »
I just built a new one for the sis in law, and she gave me this old Emachine to play with. It has Xp on it, and here are the stats.
CPU:   AMD Athlon™ 64 3400+ Processor (64-bit with AMD64 Technology)
(2.20GHz, 1600MHz FSB, 512KB L2 cache)
Operating System:   Genuine Microsoft® Windows® XP Home (SP2)
Chipset:   ATI RS482
Memory:   512MB DDR SDRAM (1 × 512MB), 400MHz (PC3200) Dual Channel
Expandable to 4GB
Hard Drive:   200GB (7200rpm, 2MB cache)
Optical Drive:   16x DVD±RW multiformat double layer drive
Media Reader:   8-in-1 digital media manager (Secure Digital™ (SD), Smart Media, Micro Drive, Memory Stick®, Memory Stick Pro®, Compact Flash, Mulitimedia Card, USB 2.0)
Video:   ATI Radeon® Xpress 200 (PCI-Express® )
Up to 128MB DDR shared video memory
PCI-Express® (PCI-E x16) slot available for upgrade
Sound:   AC '97 Audio, Dolby 5.1 (6-channel)
Network:   10/100Mbps integrated Ethernet LAN
Modem:   56K ITU V.92-ready Fax/Modem
Peripherals:   Standard Multifunction Keyboard, 2-Button Wheel Mouse, Amplified Stereo Speakers
Ports/Other:   7 USB 2.0 (2 in front, 4 in back, 1 in Media Reader), 1 IEEE 1394, 1 VGA external connector, 1 parallel, 2 PS/2, 5 audio ports (2 in front, 3 in back)

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Any ideas? I know I'll put Seti on it but that's about it.

LOL, As to the name, I went by sirgod for years here. It was kind of a large joke, as many people called me that even after going for Stephen for the last few years. When we had the Pirate weekend, I went to Booty Bay, and when IT came time to change back, I decided to put Sirgod back in until the election thing is over.

anyways...

hehe, Yeah that's true, might throw in some more memory, a HD, maybe a new Video card. But yeah, my main system blows this one out of the water.

a build in video card, well yea you will need to get one.

2 gig of ram is enough, unless you can put newer games that required more ram.

more hd like a 500 gig so you can put more stuff in it and keep the 200 gig so with 700 gig you got place to all sfc games :)

New PSU.  Put in maybe an ATI HD Radeon 4850.  Max out the ram, most definately.  Put at least a 500 gig hard drive in it, preferably SATA if the computer has that connection, which it most probably does, and get a nice budget Sound Blaster card and put it in an available PCI slot, unless you're happy enough with the onboard sound.

What's the socket of the processor?  Maybe you can upgrade the processor as well.

If you're not really gonna do much with the computer, and the system is running fine right now, then just bump the ram to 2 gigs, clean off the drive of any junk it may have, or maybe even do a reformat, so you've got a clean slate to work with, and then get either a Radeon from the 3800 series, or an nVidia card in the mid-8000 series, and leave it at that.
The pen is truly mightier than the sword.  And considerably easier to write with.

You have talked at times of trying Linux, now you have a spare machine to try it with.  Myself I suggest Linux Mint.

For a long time I just had a Linux machine experiment on and see how much I could do with it (besides run Seti on it).  Now I don't often boot the Windows machine.

So long as you have the XP disk you can always restore to XP if you want to.

Now that is an idea there Nemesis. Linux mint huh, I'll have to do a search on it.

LOL, and to think, I just now got both pc's talking to each other, as well as on the internet.

Yeah. Turn it into an application server with DHCP then learn how to run your own network. After that, install SQL Server, VS2008, build your own e_commerce website and make lots of buck off of Punisher selling him sheep pron.

Toasty is on to something.  Just do it on Linux and sell Hentai to Centurus's rubber chickens.  As their primary source they won't attack you and you can take over his evil empire (both rooms).

So you'd be selling my rubber chickens the very thing that they produce in large quantities in their spare time to earn some pocket change?  *thinks about that for a moment*

Dump XP Home, get a Server OS(2003, 2008,etc.), turn it into a server just to play around with(or run any game server service locally(like a BF1942 server or NWN server) for you to play on when you just don't want to deal with the lag of MP but don't want to play SP either).
Build an alter around it.
You then will have a proper server machine and alter to worship the hallowed server gods :notworthy: on a daily basis  :P :P :D :D

You know, that would be kinda fun having a private server. I've been a GM on a private WoW server for sometime, I might just make my own for the peeps here.

Let alone maybe a NWN server etc.
